Job description

Clinic: Whitewater Veterinary Hospital

There aren't many places where you can experience a tight‑knit, rural community with easy access to the city life. Whitewater Veterinary Hospital is that place! Here, our client’s matter, and will drive the extra mile just to stay connected. Where work feels like home. A place where we truly care about each other, our patients, and the medicine we practice. We can't wait to meet and learn from you!

  • Team‑first, highly collaborative culture with a passion for growth and discovery
  • Bring your unique skills and interests to the team!
  • A true blend of rural community, beautiful nature, and nearby urban experiences
About Us

Whitewater Veterinary Hospital, established in 1950, has been an integral part of the local community for decades. WVH is a busy mixed‑animal practice, providing care to a broad clientele that includes college students, longtime residents, and owners of large dairy and beef herds.

Dr. Janet Gildner, a graduate of UW Madison and Wisconsin native, has practiced small animal medicine for 37 years, including 27 years with WVH. She enjoys working with animals and spending time outdoors gardening and with her family.

Dr. Elizabeth Martino joined the WVH team in April 2025 following her graduation from UW Madison in 2024. Dr. Lizzy has a special interest in companion animal and exotic medicine, and participates in dog sports, camping, and hiking.

The large animal care team consists of Dr. Matt Stever and Dr. Avonlea Odling, who collectively contribute 35 years of experience to the practice.

Most of our team members care for multiple species themselves, inspiring their work. Our support staff's diverse backgrounds make discussions engaging and strengthen what we offer patients and clients. Through collaboration and shared responsibility, we maintain a positive, team‑oriented atmosphere focused on excellent patient care. We prioritize good relationships with both clients and coworkers and bring a sense of fun to our busy days.

Everyone supports each other personally and professionally. While we maintain broad skills for daily tasks, we also encourage individuals to develop their own specialties—whether it’s art, IT, animal behavior, surgery, or even organizing and cleaning!

Our core philosophies are centered on promoting a collaborative team environment, delivering high standards of care for both patients and clients, and ensuring that everyone feels at ease. We strive to communicate at the appropriate level of interest and understanding, place emphasis on disease and injury prevention, and do all we can to strengthen the bond between owner and pet. We work to practice progressive medicine with an emphasis on exceptional patient and client care.

New veterinarians will be welcomed into our team with genuine enthusiasm. Our staff values continuous learning and is committed to adopting innovative approaches to enhance the quality of care provided to our patients. While balancing professional responsibilities and personal lives can sometimes make communication challenging, we are dedicated to fostering regular dialogue, exchanging ideas, and collaborative planning.

Our support network includes access to case‑related advice upon request, mutual respect for each other's expertise and dedication, and a cohesive system offering comprehensive assistance.

Our facility includes a well‑stocked pharmacy, three exam rooms, a surgery suite, in‑house imaging, an isolation area to house sick or contagious pets, and a large, closely supervised hospitalization and treatment area.

Our clients value the attentive and individualized care provided to their pets by our dedicated team, fostering strong relationships with our staff members. WVH has built a loyal clientele, with many considering themselves part of our "family" for several years.

Located in a University of Wisconsin campus town, we also serve college students as part of our diverse client base. Though the community is modest in size, it is conveniently situated within an hour of Madison and Milwaukee, and approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Rockford and Chicago, IL. This contributes to a varied client demographic, spanning both farm/rural residents and urban populations.

  • Strong communication skills with clients and colleagues

  • Active listening abilities, including the capacity to understand both verbal and non‑verbal cues
  • Motivation to acquire specialized expertise that complements our current services (for example, interest in orthopedic surgery, chiropractic care, advanced dentistry)
