Saturday–SundayClosedOff, every weekend
After hoursGuardian Vets advice lineNo phone duty
•Every weekend off. The hospital is open weekdays from 7:30 to 7:00 and closed every Saturday and Sunday.
•Less charting, more medicine. An AI scribe drafts your medical records from the appointment, so you finish your notes at work, not at home.
•No after-hours phone duty. Our partner, Guardian Vets, answers after-hours calls, triages them and books next-day appointments. Emergencies go to nearby 24-hour hospitals.
•Room to grow. Surgery, ultrasound or integrative medicine: pick an interest and we'll help you build it.

The medicine you'll practice

•Minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopy is our standard for every spay, and we use a surgical laser.
•Serious imaging. Two advanced ultrasound machines, endoscopy and dental radiography. Several of our doctors hold small animal ultrasound certificates.
•Integrative care. Acupuncture, joint injections and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, led by Dr. Covert.
•AAHA standards. An accredited hospital, with Fear Free–certified team members.

Who you'll work with

•Dr. Carey Zumpano, founder. With nearly 30 years of experience, 20 of them as a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (canine and feline), Dr. Zumpano opened Pikesville in 2008 after practicing in Baltimore and working emergency and critical care in California. Laparoscopic spays are our standard of care, and he brings advanced interests in endoscopy, laparoscopy and ultrasound.
•Dr. Kris Covert, Medical Director. A Maryland native who worked as a veterinary technician and assistant before earning her DVM at Ross University in 2008, Dr. Covert went on to a large animal ophthalmology internship at Penn's New Bolton Center and a small animal rotating internship at Friendship Hospital for Animals. Today she leads our integrative care, trained in veterinary acupuncture with a growing focus on regenerative and sports medicine.
•Dr. Morgan Dvorkin. Raised in Baltimore's Mount Washington neighborhood, Dr. Dvorkin earned an industrial engineering and economics degree at Northwestern and worked as a business analyst before turning her love of animals into a career at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. She brings special interests in internal medicine, dermatology, behavior and pain management, including Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
•Dr. Samantha Fanelli. A 2017 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Fanelli earned her undergraduate degree with honors at Penn State and practiced in Pennsylvania before moving to Maryland to be closer to family. Her interests include behavior and training, preventive care, ophthalmology and exotic companion animals.
•Dr. Loren Hutt. An Oklahoma State veterinary graduate, class of 2010, Dr. Hutt began her career in upstate New York and, since moving to Maryland in 2016, has focused on emergency and urgent care with a strong interest in internal medicine. She joined Pikesville in August 2025 and is known for her calm, compassionate approach.
•A 20+ person support team, supported in earning Fear Free, diabetic counselor and soft-tissue ultrasonography credentials.
•Come see us. We'd love to give you a tour, so you can see firsthand what it's like to practice and grow here.
