Job summary

Nationwide is seeking an Associate State Manager for Personal Lines to help develop and execute state-specific business strategies that drive P&L goals. Under the State Manager, you will participate in financial planning, rate reviews, and market development while delivering analytical insights and planning documents.

You will coordinate cross-functional initiatives, analyze pricing and product dynamics, and prepare materials for monthly and quarterly state reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field preferred.
  • Six years of underwriting or product experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of commercial lines insurance products, pricing architecture and state regulations.
  • Proficiency with analytical tools and data analysis to support decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Support State Manager in executing state strategies by assisting with financial planning, rate reviews, and market development initiatives.
  • Prepare and analyze reports on product performance, pricing, underwriting trends, and market dynamics to identify risks and opportunities.
  • Assist in developing planning documents and review materials for monthly and quarterly state performance meetings.
  • Integrate competitive intelligence into recommendations that inform pricing and product positioning.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Operations, Claims, Pricing, Underwriting, Legal, IT, Product Development) to ensure timely execution of initiatives.
  • Coordinate and track project timelines to support speed-to-market for updates and enhancements.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations effectively to State Manager and stakeholders, adjusting approach based on audience.
  • Develop foundational knowledge of assigned state markets and competitor strategies to support decision-making.
  • Participate in professional development and mentorship opportunities, building skills for future leadership roles.

Job Description Summary

The Associate State Manager supports the development and execution of state-specific business strategies designed to drive the Personal Lines portfolio toward top and bottom-line performance goals aligned with enterprise objectives. Working under the oversight of a State Manager, this role assists in implementing processes related to financial planning, rate reviews, market development, and communication. The Associate State Manager contributes to strategic alignment by providing analytical insights, preparing planning documents, and coordinating initiatives that support pricing, underwriting appetite, product structure, and distribution strategies.

This position plays a key role in supporting operating plans that achieve P&L objectives, including combined ratio, revenue growth, regulatory management, and legal compliance. The Associate State Manager ensures execution through detailed analysis, project coordination, and collaboration with cross-functional partners. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, curiosity, and the ability to translate data into actionable insights that help maintain state strategies as relevant, competitive, and profitable.

Key Responsibilities:

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Sr State Product Manager – Personal Lines or State Product Manager – Personal Lines. Individual contributor role.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, mathematics, risk management, economics, finance, accounting, business administration or related field preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward or completion of CPCU, AU CIC, INS ARM, Actuarial exams or similar designations preferred.

Experience: Six years of experience in underwriting or product preferred. Cross-functional experience from other areas and experience with data analysis preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:Knowledge of core business functions and detailed knowledge of commercial lines insurance products and pricing architecture, state regulations, underwriting procedures and standard methodologies. Solid understanding of financials, trend analysis and competitor data. Proficiency in analytical tools, relational databases, data visualization techniques, query-based language and/or statistical software experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing to present information, communicate and influence internal and external partners at all levels. Must be skilled in the use of related systems and analytical tools. Ability to work towards results, deal with ambiguity, solve problems, learn on the job, make quality decisions, see trends and patterns within data. Ability to lead projects, opposing priorities, timelines and resources to complete work.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
