Job summary

Harris Computer is seeking a junior software developer to join the team and learn IBM i application development including RPG IV/ILE, free-format RPG, CL, Db2 for i SQL, IBM i objects, and approved development tools.

You will review existing RPG/SQL/CL and related logic, implement small, low-risk improvements under guidance, write tests, and document changes while collaborating in Agile ceremonies and code reviews.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education or training.
  • Basic programming ability in at least one structured programming language.
  • Basic understanding of variables, logic, loops, procedures, debugging, and testing.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Ability to read code, trace logic, and solve problems with guidance.
  • Good attention to detail and documentation habits.

Responsibilities

  • Learn IBM i application development using RPG IV/ILE, free-format RPG, CL, Db2 for i SQL, IBM i objects, and approved tools.
  • Review and trace RPG, SQL, CL, database, batch, and interactive logic to understand behavior and affected areas.
  • Implement clearly defined, low-risk defect fixes, maintenance changes, test improvements, and small enhancements under guidance.
  • Write clear, maintainable code, create and run unit tests, and document changes, business rules, tests, and implementation notes.
  • Participate in peer code reviews, Agile ceremonies, estimation, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
  • Communicate progress, risks, and blockers promptly and clearly.
  • Follow secure-development, data-privacy, quality, release-management, source-control, and change-control standards for regulated healthcare software.
  • Use approved AI-assisted tools responsibly and validate generated work independently.
  • Assist with deployment validation and production-support activities after gaining required access and approvals.

  • Use approved AI-assisted tools responsibly and independently validate generated analysis, code, documentation, and tests.
  • Progressively assist with deployment validation and production-support activities after demonstrating readiness and receiving required access and approvals.
Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent technical education, certification, structured training, or practical experience.
  • Zero to one year of professional software-development experience.
  • Relevant education, training, coursework, certification, or project experience may substitute for professional experience.
  • Foundational programming ability in at least one structured programming language.
  • Basic understanding of variables, logic, loops, procedures, debugging, error handling, and testing.
  • Basic knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.
  • Ability to read existing code, trace program logic, and break a defined problem into manageable steps with guidance.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, testable, standards-aligned, and documented work.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with a cross-functional software-development team.
  • Willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, document learning, and continuously develop technical skills.
