Job summary

REI Systems seeks an entry-level Java developer to join our Sterling, VA team. You will support developing, testing, and maintaining Java applications under senior guidance, and contribute to design discussions translating business requirements into software solutions.

You will gain experience with Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, SQL, and collaborative agile practices while growing through code reviews, unit tests, and production support. This role emphasizes teamwork and continuous learning.

Qualifications

• 0–2 years of software development experience, including internships or projects.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, or related field.
• Foundational experience with Java and object‑oriented programming.
• Familiarity with Spring, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, or web app development.
• Knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
• Basic familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or web tech.
• Git or other source-control experience.
• Strong problem‑solving and communication skills.
• Ability to learn new technologies and work in a team.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining Java-based applications under the guidance of senior engineers.
• Contribute to technical design discussions and help translate business and functional requirements into software solutions.
• Develop and enhance application functionality using Java, Spring/Spring Boot, REST APIs, SQL, and related technologies.
• Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code following established development standards and best practices.
• Participate in unit testing, integration testing, troubleshooting, and defect resolution.
• Assist with developing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating applications with internal and external systems.
• Work with relational databases and support data access using SQL and persistence frameworks.
• Participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including development, testing, deployment, documentation, and production support.
• Collaborate with software engineers, business analysts, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, and other project team members.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, demonstrations, and retrospectives.
• Learn and apply secure coding, cloud, CI/CD, and DevSecOps practices as part of ongoing professional development.
• Support application maintenance and production issues as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 0-2 years of software development experience, including internships, academic projects, or professional experience.
• Foundational experience with Java or another object-oriented programming language.
• Understanding of object-oriented programming concepts, data structures, and basic software development principles.
• Exposure to Spring, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, or web application development is preferred.
• Familiarity with relational databases and SQL.
• Basic understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or other web technologies.
• Familiarity with Git or another source-control system.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to learn new technologies and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Clearance: Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a Clearance.
