Job summary

Indium Corporation in Clinton, NY is seeking an Associate Scientist II to lead material preparation, testing, and characterization for product development. You will assist in designing test methodologies and modifying formulations to achieve upgraded performance, while reporting to the supervisor.

The role requires a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s with 2 years of related experience, strong communication, data processing skills, and hands-on lab work. Monday–Friday, on-site at Clinton, NY.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Lead material preparation, testing, and characterization; report to supervisor.
  • Utilize chemistry, metallurgy, and lab knowledge to assist supervisor.
  • Design and implement DOEs for upgraded performance with supervisor support.
  • Modify materials and formulations for upgraded performance.
  • Communicate with customers to understand needs and requirements.
  • Perform testing of material properties following established standards and procedures.
  • Follow industry practices for soldering, sintering, SMT, packaging, and thermal interfaces.
  • Develop new test methods and test vehicles for material development.
  • Collect, process, and interpret material testing data.

JOB SUMMARY: The Associate Scientist II is responsible for leading material preparation, testing, process development, and characterization related to product development and assisting the supervisor in material design, test methodology, and modification of formulation related to product development in a manner that is consistent with proper testing and laboratory procedures targeted towards product development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (COMPETENCIES):

  • Lead material preparation, testing, and characterization while reporting directly to the supervisor
  • Utilize chemistry, metallurgy, and relevant knowledge in a laboratory environment while assisting the supervisor
  • Design and implement DOEs for targeted upgraded performance with assistance from the supervisor, including modifying formulation, material processing, etc.
  • Devise and manufacture minor modifications of materials for upgraded performance while assisting the supervisor
  • Understand the customer needs by communicating with customers directly/indirectly
  • Perform testing of material properties and behavior (including mechanical, electrical, thermal, etc.) following well-established standards and procedures
  • Follow electronic industry practices, including applications for soldering, sintering, surface mount technology, semiconductor packaging, thermal interface interconnections, etc.
  • Design new test vehicles and/or new testing methodology for material development independently
  • Complete data collection, processing, and interpretation of material testing and performance
  • Manage and maintain equipment and consumable lab supplies for routinely used items
  • Train full-time and part-time employees on equipment and standard testing
  • Document details and procedures for testing of materials, processes, assemblies, and instrumentation
  • Assist the supervisor innovatively in developing and delivering manufacturing processes for materials
  • Optimize processing conditions and parameters to enhance material performance
  • Assist the supervisor in the development and design of novel test methodologies for more efficient material performance assessment
  • Present research findings, information, and insight internally
  • Follow laboratory compliance and site-specific environmental protection requirements, policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in a technical discipline (chemistry, metallurgy, material science, or engineering) or bachelor’s degree in technical discipline as noted above and 2 years of related technical experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills with a focus on data processing
  • Experience in safety, quality assurance, and best practices in engineering and laboratory
  • Knowledge of SPC and process variation reduction within a manufacturing environment
  • "Hand's on" machine operation and test experience
  • Demonstrated ability to complete a wide variety of assignments in a manufacturing laboratory environment with minimal support/direction
  • Ability to read and understand product design and fabrication documentation
  • Ability to document design changes for specifications, per standards
  • Provide own source of transportation for any local/day travel, including travel between Indium Corporation facilities

Office Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm

The salary range indicated in this posting represents the minimum and maximum of the range for the position. The actual range will vary based upon factors including, but not limited to, prior experience, knowledge, skill and education as they relate to the position’s qualifications, and internal equity.

$62,500-$72,350 annually
