Job summary

Merck & Co., Inc. in Rahway, NJ is seeking an Associate Scientist to design, develop, and execute robust bioprocesses supporting early- to late-stage biologics.

You will work within a collaborative PD group deploying state-of-the-art methods and digital tools to optimize manufacturing processes for life-changing medicines. The role emphasizes contributing to innovative biologics technology, scale-up studies, and cross-functional collaboration across R&D and manufacturing, with a strong emphasis

Qualifications

• BS degree (or expected completion by June 2027) in Chemical/Biochemical/Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Structural biology, or related fields
• Scientific understanding of engineering principles for recombinant protein production unit operations
• Knowledge of aseptic technique, protein biophysical properties, and general protein laboratory practices
• Strong passion to integrate science and innovation into biologics’ process development
• Experience with molecular biology, protein expression, mammalian cell culture, protein purification, biochemical engineering, or protein analytical technologies (preferred)
• Knowledge of statistical data analysis tools such as DOE and multivariate data analysis (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Contribute to development of innovative technologies for next-generation biologic manufacturing processes
• Develop and characterize robust clinical processes delivering multi-kilogram quantities of drug substance
• Independently design and conduct experiments for unit operations using relevant parameters and inputs
• Integrate unit operations with process control and monitoring platforms for concurrent operations
• Collaborate across BPR&D, process analytics, and other teams to advance biologics pipeline
• Conduct lab- and pilot-scale studies to support scale-up and tech transfer
• Contribute to a safe and compliant laboratory work environment
