The Department of Biostatistics at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, is seeking a full-time Associate Research Scientist.

The Associate Research Scientist will provide scientific and technical leadership for AI-enabled health data science research and for the Dean's AI Research Development Program.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support research projects focused on building a secure Columbia Brain Health Databank(CBDB) research sandbox and developing an agentic AI system on top of CBDB for Alzheimer's disease and broader data science research.

Support the scientific and technical operations of the Dean's AI Research Development Program, including hands-on AI solution development for two funded project teams.

Work with faculty investigators and research staff to translate scientific questions into reproducible AI workflows, prototypes, evaluation plans, and research outputs, while promoting rigorous, privacy-aware, and responsible use of clinical and research data.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Educational Requirements: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in data science, computer science, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical informatics, engineering, or a closely related quantitative field

Professional Work Experience: 5 years recommended

Demonstrated research experience in AI/machine learning, health data science, computational methods, or related areas. Experience developing research software or AI-enabled analytic workflows and working with complex biomedical or clinical data in multidisciplinary research teams. Experience with EHR data, Alzheimer's disease/dementia research, large language models or agentic AI, and secure computing environments is preferred

Skills:

Strong programming skills in Python and/or R; experience with machine learning and modern AI/LLM methods, including tool-using or agentic workflows; familiarity with SQL/databases, APIs, version control, and reproducible research practices; ability to work in secure data environments; strong scientific communication, documentation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Salary Range $100,000-$110,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
