POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Engineer Optical Metrology is accountable for methodologies to test new and existing product characteristics and performance. Methodology development includes the construction, validation, documentation and support of all optical and dimensional test methods. This Associate Engineer supports work with product development teams to transfer design requirements into test methods. He/She manages hardware acquisition efforts, working with suppliers to create new systems within budgetary and schedule constraints.

Adheres to environmental policy, procedures, and supports department environmental objectives. Engages in Credo-based decision-making.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct research and development activities related to the implementation of new optical metrology related test methods.
  • Perform routine troubleshooting.
  • Recommend quality/compliance improvements on existing instruments, and methods.
  • Perform assigned scientific experiments and procedures under supervision.
  • Provide solutions to problems of limited scope of complexity and exercise judgment within generally defined policies and procedures to determine appropriate action.
  • Assist in writing and updating protocols, test methods and standard operating procedures.
  • Collect, analyze, and compile data then summarize data for interpretation by supervisor.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment; operate hands‑on instruments considered standard in his/her area of expertise.
  • Perform analysis of optical and geometric properties of prototype and clinical supply lenses.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Optics, Physics, or Engineering.
  • Prior engineering experience in a regulated industry with optical medical devices preferred;
  • Statistical design and analysis of experiments education;
  • Basic understanding and application of principles, concepts, and practices of engineering methods;
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Conditions & Physical Demands of Job
  • Laser safety clearance
  • Ability to sit/stand in front of instruments; ability to make measurements throughout the day
  • Light lifting (up to 23 lbs.)
  • Ability to communicate clearly to various internal customers with testing requests in the lab
  • Visual acuity – ability to see lenses in liquid
