About Energy Strategies Energy Strategies is an independent energy consulting firm founded in 1986. Our clients include power producers, transmission developers, utilities, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and large energy users throughout North America. We empower clients to make informed decisions as markets, technologies, and policies evolve.

Energy Strategies generates value by harnessing the expertise of our multi-disciplinary teams in the design and application of energy strategies and solutions. We offer consultants with experience to provide insight on complex energy challenges and form robust project teams tailored to meet client objectives.

Three decades of involvement in the energy industry place us in a unique position to understand market dynamics, regulatory changes, and policy developments, helping clients navigate regulated and deregulated markets and create new opportunities as energy markets evolve.

About the Role

We are seeking an Associate Engineer / Consulting Engineer to join our Market and Transmission Analysis team. This is a full-time role for an early-career engineer with strong quantitative and analytical skills, interested in working at the intersection of transmission planning, energy markets, and grid reliability.

In this role, you will support a range of technically rigorous analyses related to transmission system performance, generator interconnection, and regional grid planning. You will work closely with senior engineers and consultants to develop data-driven insights that inform major energy infrastructure investments across North America. Our Markets and Transmission Analysis team advises energy developers, transmission companies, and utilities.

What You’ll Do

Transmission Modeling & System Analysis

  • Perform bulk transmission and interconnection analyses using commercial powerflow software such as PowerWorld, PSS®E, PSLF, or TARA.
  • Support regional transmission planning studies and interconnection analyses.
  • Evaluate transmission system performance under scenarios involving high penetrations of renewable generation and complex transmission buildouts.
  • Perform studies including powerflow, transfer limit, reliability, and system performance analyses.

Data Analysis & Study Development

  • Develop technically sound study assumptions using the best available system data and market intelligence.
  • Build and manage modeling datasets across power system simulation platforms.
  • Develop generator interconnection powerflow models and support generator interconnection applications.
  • Coordinate modeling efforts across internal teams and proprietary datasets.

Technical Communication & Client Support

  • Translate technical results into clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal teams and clients.
  • Interface with clients professionally when discussing study results.

Tools & Process Improvement

  • Develop analytical tools and workflows using Excel or Python.
  • Contribute to internal best practices for modeling, data management, and analytical processes.
What You Bring

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 3–8+ years of relevant industry experience, preferably in transmission planning, power system modeling, or energy markets.
  • Prior experience at an ISO/RTO, utility, consulting firm, or energy developer is strongly preferred.
  • Experience using powerflow simulation software (PowerWorld, PSS®E, PSLF, or similar).
  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills, with proficiency in Excel and strong attention to data quality.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings through reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and in small technical teams in a fast-paced consulting environment.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience performing power flow analysis, particularly using PowerWorld or TARA.
  • Familiarity with generator interconnection processes and transmission service studies.
  • Knowledge of FERC-jurisdictional transmission and interconnection processes.
  • Familiarity with NERC Planning Standards and transmission planning criteria.
  • Experience developing analytical tools using Python or other programming languages.
  • Interest in the evolving power grid, including renewables, energy storage, and large-scale transmission development.
Location

We welcome applicants across the U.S., with a preference for candidates located in or open to relocating to Utah.
