Job summary

Black & Veatch is looking for an Associate Electrical Engineer based in Overland Park, KS. This role involves supporting various substation projects and developing detailed design deliverables for high voltage systems.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, at least 1 year of relevant experience, and preferably an EIT certification. Responsibilities include performing QA/QC, preparing specifications, and mentoring entry-level engineers.

Role

Associate Electrical Engineer

Location

Key Responsibilities
  • Support a variety of substation projects ranging up to 765kV in engineering detailed design and Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC).
  • Develop protection and control design deliverables including protective relays, panel arrangements, one line/single line diagrams, three line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring and equipment wiring within high voltage substation designs.
  • Develop physical design deliverables including yard layout plans, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC/DC power systems within high voltage substation designs.
  • Prepare equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.
  • Correspond with clients, vendors and subcontractors.
  • Potential travel opportunities to client and vendor offices and/or project sites for design reviews, construction coordination and field verification.
  • Adhere to and/or prepare design budgets and schedules.
  • Perform QA/QC responsibilities.
  • Provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
  • Perform substation designs, including physical design, protection and control with an emphasis on continuous improvement.
  • Continue to learn and remain current on departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies and procedures, applying knowledge to assigned tasks.
  • Develop and independently apply knowledge, comply with the B&V quality program relative to assigned tasks, and support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Prepare a variety of increasingly complex engineering deliverables, perform research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection, collect, assimilate and manage data for engineering work, and perform increasingly complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
  • Understand, adhere to and/or prepare budget, schedule, and quality requirements, recognize, define and resolve problems within assigned area, and provide direction and guidance to others.
  • Assign and guide tasks to develop entry level professionals and/or interns, coordinate with project leadership and other internal/external team members on high voltage substation projects, and interact with other disciplines on details of design work.
  • Work to understand external client's interest and drivers through regular interaction and communication; focus also on needs of internal clients and project leadership; provide support to business development or pursuit activities.
  • Share current knowledge of latest technology and processes.
  • As skills develop, assist with performance management process, recognition, and any corrective actions required; actively mentor and train entry level professionals and interns.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High voltage (HV) substation design experience – Physical and/or Protection & Controls.
  • Engineering-in-Training (EIT) Certification.
  • Proficient with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office Programs (such as Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a recognized accredited program in the applicant's home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
  • Minimum of 1 year related work experience.
