Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking an electrical/mechanical engineer to research, develop, and deploy new systems and technologies. You will identify and evaluate innovative approaches, collaborate with internal teams and the parent company, and help bring advanced automation and power-converter concepts to market.

You will prepare design specifications, test plans, and technical reports, while ensuring client needs are met and projects stay on track. Domestic and international travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • BS in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Concentration in electrical power systems, control theory, power electronics, embedded systems, mechatronics, or related areas.
  • Co-op, internship, or other work experience.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and client-facing abilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork with diverse contacts.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Identify new technologies to address client needs and create differentiating value.
  • Evaluate feasibility, cost, and benefits of new technologies for automation and power products.
  • Incorporate selected technologies with engineering teams and partners.
  • Recommend tool and feature modifications to support development and deployment.
  • Develop relationships with the parent company and coordinate design activities.
  • Perform engineering design, planning, and project execution with the parent company.
  • Prepare detailed engineering documentation and reports.
  • Troubleshoot client design issues and escalate as needed.
  • Suggest product upgrades to enhance safety and functionality.
  • Conduct development tests to ensure productive and safe delivery.
  • Coordinate with the parent company to streamline design and development.

General Role Description

Research, assist in the development and deployment of new systems and technologies

Role Accountabilities
  • Identify new technologies that have the potential to address the present, but unfilled, needs of our clients, or that create demand as a direct result of significant performance improvements that will provide a level of direct benefit to our clients sufficient to differentiate the Company from our competitors
  • Evaluate the feasibility, cost, and benefits of incorporating new technologies in the Company's automation and/or power converter products
  • Incorporate selected technologies into the Company's automation and/or power converter products in cooperation with the Company, parent company, and third-party development teams, as assigned
  • Recommend modifications to existing tools and features of new tools that are necessary to support the engineering and commissioning of products that incorporate selected technologies
  • Develop effective working relationships and productive communication with parent company
  • Perform engineering design, development planning, and project execution in coordination with the parent company, as assigned
  • Prepare detailed engineering documentation, including user manual, design specifications, test plan, and technical reports, as assigned
  • Resolve client design issues with new products, including troubleshooting issues at the job site if necessary, and documenting issues for escalation to development engineering, under the direction of appropriate technical personnel
  • Recommend product upgrades and changes to promote safety and functionality
  • Perform development testing activities as assigned to ensure work is accomplished productively and safely
  • Develop effective working relationships and productive communication with parent company to facilitate cooperation and coordination in design and development planning and project execution

Requirements
  • Bachelor of science degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or equivalent via education and/or work experience
  • Classes, labs, and projects with a concentration in some combination of electrical power systems, control systems theory, power electronics, embedded systems, mechatronics, Solar and ESS Inverters, power magnetics or AC/DC drives and motors.
  • Co-op, internship, or other work experience
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
  • Demonstrated innovative problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated successful working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated successful and positive personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement in areas of responsibility
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in Japanese and English languages, both oral and written
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally, sometimes with limited notice, and with duration dependent on job assignment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master of science or PhD in electrical or mechanical engineering or related field
  • Research projects or thesis in the areas of electrical power systems, control systems theory, power electronics, embedded systems, mechatronics, power magnetics, or AC/DC drives and motors.
  • Co-op, internship, or other work experience in the above areas
