SALARY RANGE: $70,304-$90,000
HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at theminimum of the classification,commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, andtraining.

Definition of Classification:

The Associate Dean of Residence Life and Housing serves as thechief student housing officer providing leadership and visionarystrategic planning. The inspirational leader ensures thedepartment supports both University needs, academic mission, core values, andholistic student success and development within a thriving anddynamic living-learning residential program experience as well asprovides leadership, direction and supervision to residential life, housing, inclusive of student Undergraduate, Greek Life, andGraduate and Family Housing. The Associate Dean will also partnerwith Johnston Center for Integrative Studies and Woodbury Residence Life to ensure operational guidance, support, andsystemwideintegration. The thought partner is committed to inclusive excellence andbuildscollaborative partnerships with academic and non-academicdepartments to develop highquality and innovative residential student-focused co-curriculum and programs to reflect nationalbestpractices in residential education programs within liberal artsenvironments, anchoring studentcareer and life skill developmentoutcomes, andhigh impact practices. This includes partnershipswith academic affairs via expansion of faculty and studentengagement opportunities, and initiatives that support studentsuccess, wellbeing, development, retention, andengagement. The Associate Dean will provide supervisory oversight for professionalstaff members, graduate assistants, undergraduate studentemployees, undergraduate studentleaders, along with staff trainingand development in support of the University’s educationalobjectives. This is a 12-month full-time position with theopportunity to live-on in a rent-free apartment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to,the following:

Housing and Residence Life:
  • Oversee Residence Life and Housing, including staffing andsupervision, departmental budget management and oversight(including gift funding), marketing and program development,contract management, residential facilities, housing operations,policy development and implementation, relationship cultivation(internal and external partnerships), technology andassessment.
  • Provide systemwide oversight, alignment, direction, andtraining for use of housing software. Leads related cross-campusdepartmental partnerships.
  • Develop and implement a robust residential educationco-curriculum program model with a focus on community belonging,meaningful student living-learning residential communityexperience, inclusive excellence, class-based Bulldog Pathwaysinitiatives and programs integration, and skill development throughhigh impact practices supporting student success in collaborationwith campus partners.
  • Enhance resident assistant high impact student leadershipexperience, inclusive of an academic course, integratingexperiential learning and career development.
  • Enhance residential student engagement through development ofResidential Hall Association and support establishment ofpeer-based educational residential student conduct board.
  • Expand partnership with Student Campus Life and Office ofInclusion and Community to bolster student engagement and communityconnection, including late-night and weekend programming (e.g.Hunsaker After Dark), and Greek Life residential studentexperience.
Supervision and Training:
  • Provide supervision and training for professional,paraprofessional, graduate assistants, undergraduate studentemployees, undergraduate student leaders, and formulate individualperformance and professional development goals aligned with thedepartment’s mission and strategic plan. Provides dotted linesupervision to Woodbury Residence Life Coordinator.
  • Meets regularly with direct reports to assess progress towardsgoals, track and evaluate residential student retention andoutcomes, key performance indicators, discuss professional growthand development, provide support and direction, promote teamworkand individual accountability, and acknowledge performancemilestones and achievements.
  • Provide training and coaching support to departmental staff inprogramming, emergency preparedness and response (including, butnot limited to, Title IX related incidents), residential educationand co-curriculum, leadership development, safety, student crisisintervention, and risk management.
Administrative:
  • Coordinate all on-call duty schedules and training regardingduties and responsibilities for residential life staff and studentleaders. Perform on-call duty coverage on a rotating basis andrespond to student crises and campus emergencies when necessary.Conduct annual review of on-call procedures and training.
  • Manage referrals and student issues related to distress/crisisinterventions and policy violations, following internal protocolsand procedures.
  • Serve as the designee for the Dean of Students in their absenceand as necessary due to caseload.
  • Represent the Division of Student Affairs as funds permit atregional and national meetings to maintain knowledge of bestpractices, support professional development, and strive to enhancestudent housing and wellbeing at the University.
  • Serve as one of the leaders within the Division of StudentAffairs responsible for the execution of a transformational studentexperience, student success initiatives and cultivating communityin alignment with the institutional strategic plan.
  • Develop assessment plan for residence life with an emphasis onprogrammatic evaluation to identify student retention, persistenceand experience outcomes and identify strategies that willfacilitate the creation and/or modification of effective,data-informed and impactful residential initiatives.
  • Conduct related evaluation and research as needed based onnational emerging trends, issues, best practices, and/or systemicoperational needs to enhance student success.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties, including providingsemester reports, surveys, data analysis, and other requesteddocuments to prioritize data-informed practices. Serve ondivisional assessment committee.
  • Participate in policy development and revision along with thecreation of systems and procedures for implementation of new andongoing policies.
  • Serve on various Student Affairs and University committees,supports divisional and campuswide initiatives and programs, andserve in other capacities as assigned.
  • Support the Dean of Students and Vice President for StudentAffairs in completion of special projects, programs and servicesthat support the mission of the University and the Division ofStudent Affairs.
  • Managing student information, data, and records in accordancewith FERPA.
  • Assist in serving as conduct hearing officer and investigatorwhen needed.
  • Perform other essential duties, projects, and tasksassigned.
Budgets and Fundraising:
  • Partner closely with admissions and business and finance onannual enrollment and housing projections.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of grant proposals anddivisional fundraising priorities, ensuring alignment with donorinterests and organizational needs.
  • Oversee the budgets and finances for all supervised areas,ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures and/oractivity fee guidelines.
  • Provide oversight of departmental, gift funds, grant fundingand compliance with fund assurances such as gift tracking,reporting and donor funding guidelines.
  • Assist in “friend building” in collaboration with divisionleadership and the Office of Advancement to garner financialsupport among current and potential stakeholders. Foster meaningfulprogrammatic engagement and affinity with alumni, parents andfamily members, and community stakeholders.

Experience/Training/Education:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, education, student affairs, orrelated field.
  • Five years of professional work experience in residence lifeand housing, inclusive of student conduct hearing officer and CARETeam membership experience.
  • Experience with student wellbeing, wellness programs, and/orhealth education outreach programs.
  • A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a gooddriving record is Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid untilappointment. A valid California Class “C” driver’s license must beobtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CAVehicle Code 12505c).
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong understanding of the importance of student leadershipdevelopment theoretical models, co-curricular programs, studentlearning outcomes and assessment in supporting the academic missionof the division and values of the University.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge and awareness of best practicesregarding safety of students involved with residence life,residential education, student wellbeing practices, CARE Team,student conduct, and co-curricular programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting unity and community in adiverse environment, and knowledge of trends, implementation ofeffective practices that result in student engagement, persistenceand retention especially for historically underrepresentedstudents.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to interact collaboratively andeffectively with diverse constituencies, fostering strong positiveworking relationships with campus partners, stakeholders,leadership and students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, andleadership skills. Ability to effectively communicate andcollaborate with all levels within the University amongst diversepopulations, including students, staff, faculty, administrators,families, and other internal and external constituents andpartners, verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising a team of multiplefull-time professional staff members along with student staff,setting visionary departmental direction and development, andmaking appropriate personnel actions along with the ability toevaluate and effectively address performance.
  • Ability to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolutionskills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective actionas needed and dealing with stressful situations while maintainingprofessionalism, respect, and composure.
  • Strong ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment,with strong organizational and time-management skills along withfinancial acumen and the ability of manage budgets from an array offunding sources.
  • Ability to use computer technology and systems, includingrecent versions of Microsoft Office Suite, social media andinternet research.   • Knowledge and demonstrated experience managing compliance withapplicable risk and liability issues, safety, policies, crisisresponse, Title IX training, trends and issues in higher education,state and federal requirements within residence life and behaviorintervention.
  • Ability to provide own transportation for local travel asneeded. This position requires flexibility to work evening andweekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.
  • Demonstrated active engagement in national student affairsfield profession and staying current on national best practices andhigh impact practices to bolster inclusive excellence, studentretention and success.
  • Preferred CPR/AED/First Aid Certificate.
