Job summary

George Mason University College of Science seeks an Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs to provide leadership over recruitment, appointment, promotion and tenure, mentoring, professional development, and faculty success initiatives.

The role coordinates P&T processes, supports department chairs, conducts annual training, manages budgets, ensures policy compliance, and collaborates with central offices to advance faculty excellence within the COS.

Qualifications

• Terminal degree in a related field.
• Demonstrated record of scholarly/research achievement, teaching, and service commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.
• Responsible academic administrative experience (e.g., department chair, program manager/director, center director, associate dean, or equivalent).
• Experience in mentoring faculty and supervising faculty development programs.
• Comprehensive knowledge of faculty lifecycle processes (renewal, reappointment, promotion, tenure).
• Knowledge of shared governance principles, faculty governance structures, bylaws, etc.
• Understanding of budgetary principles and resource allocation related to faculty affairs.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold high ethical standards.
• Ability to mentor and guide faculty and leaders in faculty career progression.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to foster an environment conducive to all faculty.
• Ability to use metrics/data analytics for decision-making.
• Vision for faculty success and pedagogical trends.
• Commitment to faculty success initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention of faculty.
• Oversee promotion and tenure (P&T) processes and merit review cycles.
• Provide mentoring and professional development opportunities for faculty.
• Interpret and implement personnel policies for alignment with standards.
• Coordinate with COS and university offices on faculty relations and compliance.
• Collaborate with central Faculty Affairs, Provost’s Office, HR, and Teaching & Learning Centers to align priorities.
• Support department chairs and faculty in P&T dossiers and related processes.
• Manage budgets related to faculty affairs and resource allocation.
