Job description

Amant is seeking an Associate Curator to join their team. Successful candidates should have experience curating projects across cultural media, including visual arts, literature, performance, film, and music. Amant is a nonprofit arts organization in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 2019. The core of Amant’s mission is to advance the presentation of contemporary art and provide a platform for innovation through exhibitions of visual art, multimedia productions, live performances, and public engagement programs.

Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the Chief Curator, collaborate with Amant’s Senior Leadership and curatorial team to ensure that the curatorial programs are aligned to Amant’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities.
  • Develop exhibition formats and editorial content in close collaboration with the Chief Curator, Curator, and Amant team.
  • Research and negotiate loans, exhibition check lists, and facilitate exhibition production.
  • Cultivate relationships with artists, collaborators, and external stakeholders to ensure institutional programing is executed at the highest level.
  • Track and adhere to the institutions’ existing programs budget.
  • Participate in the installation of exhibitions, and production of Amant programs.
  • Compose essays and curatorial texts.
  • Research, author and edit curatorial copy, exhibition related printed matter, including wall vinyl, labels, gallery guides, brochures, and other institutional materials.
  • Seek and develop opportunities for collaboration and partnership with third parties to maximize resources where possible.
  • Conceptualize and collaborate on public programs aimed at new and diverse audiences through community engagement and educational offerings to expand the reach of contemporary art, including but not limited to performances and concerts, seminars and lectures as well as academic workshops.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of contemporary art practice through visits to exhibitions, artists’ studios, conferences, and discussions.
  • Participate in the annual selection process of the Amant New York artist-in-residency program.
  • Participate and collaborate with the curatorial team and the Residency and Alumni Manager to execute a rigorous and engaging residency program to include<Studio visits from NYC based cultural and art professionals; provide introductions and access to other New York City institutions and scholarly archives, plan offsite visits and other activities.
  • In collaboration with the Residency and Alumni Manager, mentor and oversee the execution of the artists in residence public presentation For Your Reference.
  • Establish and foster strong contacts within the profession, to keep abreast of critical debates and developments in museums and the arts, both domestic and international.
  • Answer inquiries and conduct tours as necessary for visitors, etc.
  • Perform any other duties related to the functions described above.
Requirements
  • Post graduate Degree in Art History, Philosophy or related field; PhD in Art History preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of curatorial experience in museums and/or cultural institutions.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Portfolio of realized projects that demonstrate knowledge and expertise of contemporary art, including visual arts, literature, art criticism, performance, film, and music.
  • Experience cultivating new resources of support for exhibitions and public projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of and enthusiasm for global contemporary visual art, artists, museums, and exhibitions, including a strong and diverse network of professional contacts in the field.
  • Ability to represent the institution with the highest level of integrity and professionalism, advocate for and adhere to museum policies, and contribute to and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with small, dedicated teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with general administrative duties.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, MS Office Suite (Word and Excel), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop), and ArtBase.
  • A valid US work permit
