Job description

Our live events play an important role in this mission, connecting readers to the story and to each other. From flagship convenings like DealBook and Climate Forward to immersive gatherings like Hard Fork Live, New York Times events intrigue, inform and inspire in equal measure.

This is a leadership role for an accomplished creative who can translate the value of world-class journalism into powerful design experiences. You will help bring New York Times journalism to life and create compelling environments for a portfolio of public events and experiences. You will lead creative work that defines both individual events and the overall audience experience across our events portfolio. As part of a cross-disciplinary team, you will shape how audiences experience these moments across every touchpoint, from physical stages to digital screens to marketing assets.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters and requires regular in-office attendance three days per week.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the strategic visual development and art direction for our portfolio of public events and experiences, demonstrating expert knowledge of spatial design, environmental graphics, wayfinding, audience journeys, live audience engagement, and meticulous physical execution.
  • Guide the creative lifecycle of each event—from naming and foundational identity to marketing campaigns, live production, and post-event storytelling.
  • Thoughtfully integrate the design of sponsor support into revenue-generating events, balancingbusiness objectiveswith an audience experience that reflects the values of our journalism.
  • Art direct video interstitials and live screen graphics, working closely with our Senior Writer for Events to merge narrative outlines with visual storytelling, and collaborating with editors and motion designers to create work that defines the event experience.
  • Work across editorial, events, and marketing to secure resources, navigate live-event production challenges, and steward relationships between editorial priorities and advertisingobjectives.
  • Oversee the thoughtful documentation of our events, working with photo editors to capture high-quality visual assets that extend the life of the experience and support future programming and partnerships.
  • Manage and mentora design team dedicated to event projects,cultivatingan environment of high-quality execution,continuouslearning, and diverse perspectives.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of ourvalue of journalistic independenceand astrongcommitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Director, Brand Identity.
Basic Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of hands‑on experiencein brand identity, spatial and experiential design, environmental graphics, and live-event production.
  • A versatile design portfolio showcasing an experience with layout, typography, and experience handling high-profile editorial content and designing around newsmakers.
  • A strong conceptual understanding of motion design and the ability to think in and direct motion, with considerable experience collaborating with external motion design studios or internal teams to execute graphics for event screens, presentations, and digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with video production workflows and experience directing editors, motion designers, and video teams on larger-scale event productions.
  • Proficiency across contemporary design tools (Figma, Adobe Creative Suite) and presentation software (Google Slides), with astrongunderstanding of motion workflows and social publishing platforms.
  • A track record ofeffectivepeople management, including creatingrobustdevelopment plans, deliveringactionablefeedback, andfosteringan environment of trust and respect.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • B.A., B.F.A. or M.F.A.
  • A high bar of accountability and the ability to navigate the demands of live-event productionunder tight deadlines.
  • Experience designing for physical environments, including signage systems, audience wayfinding, and large-scale event graphics.
  • A genuinepassion forjournalism and a deep curiosity about our work and company—we hope you enjoyreading, watching, and listeningto it.
Additional Compensation and Benefits

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits may include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs.

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $148,000 — $170,000 USD
