SMBC Group is seeking an Associate in the Securitized Products and Capital Solutions Department in the United States (New York). The role focuses on collateral underwriting for lender finance facilities, including leveraged middle market loans and related analysis for asset manager clients.

You will collaborate with Origination and Execution teams, prepare credentialed approval requests, and monitor monthly collateral reports to identify performance changes and risks.

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $150,000.00 and $200,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Role Description

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation is hiring an Associate in the Securitized Products and Capital Solutions Department. This person will work within the Collateral Underwriting team on Lender Finance facility collateral. This collateral is in the form of loans (primarily leveraged middle market loans) that are reviewed and graded prior to their inclusion in borrowing bases for facilities to asset manager customers.

Responsibilities include preparing requests for new and upsize approval requests, preparing analysis for reevaluation events as needed based on certain performance changes, managing syndication and diligence questions as needed in partnership with the Origination and Execution team, and annual reviews.

A key responsibility will be to establish a dialogue with one or more assigned clients to ensure proper management of the client’s portfolios of loan collateral. The person will review monthly client reporting of collateral loan portfolio reports and identify performance deterioration as well as any changes in portfolio composition.

Role Objectives
  • Develop and maintain relationships with asset manager clients to support effective collateral management
  • Partner with Origination and Execution teams to address syndication, diligence, and investor inquiries
  • Support credit decisioning through valuation analysis and risk assessment
  • Monitor collateral portfolios on an ongoing basis, identifying credit deterioration and key risk trends
  • Review monthly client reporting and assess changes in portfolio composition and performance
  • Conduct detailed financial statement and fundamental credit analysis on leveraged loan collateral
  • Build and maintain financial projection models using SMBC’s proprietary tools
  • Evaluate cash flow stability, debt service capacity, and overall creditworthiness of underlying obligors
  • Prepare credit approval materials, including new transactions, upsizes, and reevaluation requests
  • Participate in annual reviews and other periodic portfolio assessments
Qualifications And Skills
  • 2-5 years of relevant experience in credit analysis, leveraged finance, structured finance, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with experience in financial statement and credit analysis
  • Understanding of leveraged finance, middle market lending, or structured credit products
  • Ability to interpret financial models and assess cash flow projections and credit risk
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both clients and internal stakeholders
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with project finance or digital infrastructure is a plus
