Job summary

Buro Happold in Boston seeks an Associate Civil Engineer to lead design and development of resilient, sustainable infrastructure. You will manage multi-disciplinary projects and coordinate with clients and internal teams.

Applicants should have a Bachelor's in civil engineering, 8+ years' experience, PE license, and proficiency in Civil3D, GIS, and AutoCAD; knowledge of hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and green infrastructure is preferred. Hybrid work option.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • 8+ years of progressively challenging civil engineering projects.
  • PE license required.
  • Proficient in Civil3D, GIS, and AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, utility design, shaping earthwork, and green infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical input and innovative solutions for challenging engineering problems, particularly in sustainable and resilient design.
  • Manage complex multi-disciplinary projects from conception to completion, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budgets and timelines.
  • Lead client interactions to understand needs and translate them into effective engineering solutions.
  • Contribute to maintaining high standards of work across projects.
  • Lead collaboration with geotechnical, transportation, environmental, and other disciplines to develop holistic solutions.
  • Support adoption of new technologies and methodologies in civil engineering.
  • Promote sustainability integration in projects and mentor junior engineers.

Your next role

As an Associate Civil Engineer and key member of our North American Civil Infrastructure Team, you'll lead the design and development of resilient and sustainable civil engineering solutions. Your role will involve:

  • Technical Contributions: Provide technical input and innovative solutions for challenging engineering problems, particularly in sustainable and resilient design.
  • Project Management: Manage complex and multi‑disciplinary projects from conception to completion, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budgets and timelines.
  • Client Relations: Lead client interactions, helping to understand their needs and translate them into effective engineering solutions.
  • Quality Assurance: Contribute to maintaining high standards of work across projects.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Lead collaboration efforts with experts from various disciplines, including geotechnical engineering, transportation planning, environmental engineering, economics, sustainability, mobility, and energy to develop holistic solutions.
  • Innovation: Contribute to the adoption of new technologies and methodologies in civil engineering.
  • Sustainability Focus: Support sustainable and green infrastructure practices, ensuring their integration into projects.
  • Professional Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering their technical and professional development while continuing to advance your own expertise.
  • Advisory Services: Provide expert consultation to clients, government agencies, and partner organizations on complex infrastructure challenges, sustainable design strategies, and resilience planning. Represent Buro Happold in high‑level discussions and decision‑making processes that shape the future of urban environments.
  • Strategic Team Planning: Contribute to the development of long‑term strategies for the Civil Infrastructure Team, identifying emerging trends and opportunities for innovation.
Your Skills And Experience
  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • Professional Experience: 8+ years in progressively challenging civil engineering projects.
  • Licensing: PE license required.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Civil3D, GIS, and AutoCAD. Familiarity with emerging technologies in civil engineering.
  • Core Knowledge: Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, utility design, grading, earthwork, sustainable design practices, and green infrastructure.
  • Project Management: Experience in supporting project delivery, including assisting with crafting scopes of work, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and contribute to a collaborative environment.
  • Industry Engagement: Interest in participating in professional organizations and contributing to the field of sustainable infrastructure.
  • Project Portfolio: Demonstrated track record of successfully delivered complex civil engineering projects.
  • Adaptive Leadership: Readiness to push boundaries, rally teams around novel challenges, and engineer bespoke solutions in unfamiliar territories.
What We Offer
  • Salary range of $125,000 – $155,000. This will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and/or experience.
