Job description

Who we are

Zus Health is a platform company on a mission to steward the migration of healthcare from silos and monopolies to more effective, precise care that is based on a complete, real time understanding of patients. As we move from a small number of imprecise drugs and a small number of generic “everything care” health systems to a large number of highly targeted, digital-first care delivery organizations, we must also accommodate a migration to targeted software workflows. Zus has built the picks and shovels for the migration. A national API first MPI and common patient record, the fastest and most complete data network in the nation, and a growing library of data automations and transformations that increase the profitability of provider patient centered care. Founded in 2021 by Jonathan Bush, co‑founder and former CEO of athenahealth, Zus partners with healthcare’s greatest inventors – payers and providers of all kinds – by maximizing the value of true patient insight.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a highly organized, intellectually curious, and ambitious Associate Chief of Staff to work directly with our CEO, Jonathan Bush, and help our Senior Leadership Team operate at its best.

This is a unique opportunity for someone earlier in their career who wants a front-row seat to building and scaling a healthcare technology company. You’ll work alongside our CEO and executive team to help maintain focus, make decisions, communicate clearly, and ensure the organization follows through on its most important priorities.

You are passionate about healthcare and want to see technology transform the outcomes, cost, and experience of care. You’re hungry to make a difference in a fluid, fast-moving startup and are equally comfortable working through a business strategy, digging into a complicated data set, preparing a nuanced meeting agenda, or capturing the details and action items that keep a leadership team moving.

This role reports directly to our CEO and will be based in Portland, Maine, where Jonathan is located. You should also expect to travel regularly with Jonathan and other members of the leadership team.

What you’ll do
  • Focus our Senior Leadership Team on the most important issues by organizing and managing SLT meetings, developing agendas, taking clear and comprehensive notes, documenting decisions and action items, and ensuring consistent follow-through across leaders.

  • Support our CEO, Jonathan Bush, by helping prioritize his focus and providing leverage across the day-to-day. You’ll anticipate needs, keep important priorities moving, prepare him for meetings, and jump into whatever will help him and Zus be more effective.

  • Drive follow-through across the organization by translating leadership discussions into clear owners, next steps, and timelines and proactively ensuring commitments don’t fall through the cracks.

  • Ensure clear communication with our Board, investors, leadership team, customers, and broader market by developing crisp, thoughtful, and compelling presentations, memos, analyses, and other materials.

  • Turn information into insight by digging into business data, synthesizing complex topics, conducting research, and helping our leadership team get to the information needed to make better and faster decisions.

  • Take on special projects alongside our CEO and leadership team.

What you demonstrate
  • Strong business skills that allow you to craft presentations, build content, manage processes, conduct analyses, and quickly get up to speed on unfamiliar problems.

  • Experience as an Analyst or Associate in consulting, banking, PE/VC, strategy, business operations, or a similar environment is a strong plus. This is a perfect opportunity for someone to get hands‑on experience should you desire to go to business school

  • Exceptional organization and attention to detail. You can manage a nuanced leadership agenda, capture the substance of a fast-moving conversation, identify decisions and next steps, and reliably make sure people follow through.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. You can synthesize a complicated discussion into a clear set of takeaways and create polished materials for executives, Board members, investors, customers, and employees.

  • Sound judgment and discretion. You’ll have visibility into sensitive company, employee, customer, and strategic information and understand how to operate with maturity and confidentiality.

  • An enthusiastic willingness to roll up your sleeves and tend to the administrative and tactical alongside the strategic. You’ll approach note‑taking, agenda‑setting, scheduling, and follow‑up with the same energy you bring to strategy and special projects.

  • A self‑starter attitude and comfort with the fast, sometimes unstructured nature of an early‑stage company. You don’t need every problem perfectly defined before figuring out how to move it forward.

  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn. You ask good questions, absorb information quickly, and are excited by the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced CEO and leadership team.

  • Passion for healthcare and technology. You believe in Zus’s mission and are excited to learn the dynamics of healthcare, interoperability, and the challenges technology companies face as they work to change the status quo.

  • A collaborative, low‑ego approach. You’re comfortable working behind the scenes to make others more effective and know that sometimes the highest‑impact work is making sure the details are handled exceptionally well.

  • Ability to be based in Portland, Maine and flexibility to travel regularly with our CEO as business needs require.

We will offer you
  • Competitive compensation that reflects the value you bring to the team a combination of cash and equity

  • Robust benefits that include health insurance, wellness benefits, 401k with a match, unlimited PTO

  • Opportunity to work alongside a passionate team that is determined to help change the world (and have fun doing it)

Please Note: Research shows that candidates from underrepresented backgrounds often don’t apply unless they meet 100% of the job criteria. While we have worked to consolidate the minimum qualifications for each role, we aren’t looking for someone who checks each box on a page; we’re looking for active learners and people who care about disrupting the current healthcare system with their unique experiences.
