Job summary

The New Mexico Department of Health, Scientific Laboratory, Chemistry Bureau, seeks an analytical chemist to perform environmental testing of water samples for pollutants using EPA methods. You will operate gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography instrumentation and prepare results for supervisor review.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor's in Chemistry with about one year of laboratory experience and familiarity with common lab equipment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field, or four years of related experience.
• 1 year of experience in an analytical or clinical laboratory.
• 1 year of experience with standard lab equipment (pipettes, volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, pH indicators, analytical balances).
• 1 year of experience in environmental pollutant testing of water samples.

How does it get done?

Performing the analyses of water and soil samples for the presence of chemical pollutants by following standard operation procedures and the US Environmental Protection Agency testing methods. Processing, evaluating, organizing, and submitting laboratory test results for review and acceptance by a supervisor. Operating gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and liquid chromatography instrumentation. Managing inventory and ordering laboratory supplies. Preparing sample kits for clients.

Who are the customers?

New Mexico Environment Dept. (Drinking Water Bureau, Ground Water Quality Bureau, Surface Water Quality Bureau, Solid Waste Bureau, Air Quality Bureau), All New Mexico public water systems, all New Mexico tribal entities, National Park Service, US Forest Service, and contractors who manage public water systems.

Ideal Candidate

• The ideal candidate would have 1 year of experience working in an analytical laboratory or a clinical laboratory.
• The ideal candidate would also have 1 year of experience using standard laboratory equipment such as pipettes, volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, pH indicators, and analytical balances.
• The ideal candidate would also have 1 year of experience working in a laboratory testing for environmental pollutants in water samples.

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or closely related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education.

Employment Requirements

Working in a laboratory environment. Pre-employment drug screening required.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a fully functional laboratory containing biological, chemical, physical, and radiological hazards. Incumbent will be required to use all applicable safety equipment provided by the employer and follow all safety precautions specified by the employer. There will be extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements with computer usage or assay/methodologies utilized. Work involves using high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high-pressure gas cylinders. Ability to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
