Job Description

Private Austin law firm is seeking a motivated associate attorney with 0-5 years’ experience in municipal/local government transactional law and municipal court prosecution. The Firm serves various public entity clients, predominantly municipalities. In your role as Assistant City Attorney, you will represent cities in general counsel legal representation and municipal prosecution for several of our clients, working collaboratively with City leaders and their staff.

The position includes serving as municipal court prosecutor requiring a working understanding of State criminal law, as well as various code enforcement matters pursuant to State law and/or the City’s building and standards codes.

In performing transactional work, the position requires reviewing and drafting general goods and services agreements, leases, easements, municipal ordinances and resolutions, and handling personnel matters, land development issues, economic development, and complex legal research; analyzing and preparing formal legal opinions in response to questions and issues raised by clients; and reviewing and providing interpretation and opinions relating to legislation and case law directly or indirectly affecting all aspects related to municipal and local government clients.

You will need to provide practical and sometimes creative solutions and be able to pivot within the complex legal field of governmental law, as well as learn about the municipal court system and prosecutions. Your judgment will be tested knowing you need to provide practical solutions while maintaining compliance with all laws. Challenging, yes; rewarding, also yes.

Certifications/Licenses Required
  • Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License; and
  • Member of the Texas State Bar in good standing.

  • Candidate must possess excellent research, writing, organizational, and communication skills and should demonstrate the ability to work both cooperatively with others and independently, as circumstances demand.
  • Candidate must have strong written and oral skills, demonstrating an ability to present complex information clearly.
  • Candidate must be able to work independently and to manage multiple priorities, adapt to the changing needs of our clients, demonstrate attention to detail while assisting with problem solving and ensuring alignment of goals of the municipality.
  • Candidate must have strong integrity, ability to maintain confidentiality and ability to communicate difficult answers to the client.
  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of State criminal law, Federal and State laws that affect local governmental entities, zoning and land use, employment laws and personnel matters, utility law, and open government laws.
  • Candidate must be able to manage a criminal caseload; handle the prosecution of cases from beginning to end, including reviewing the initial complaint, discovery, pre-trial negotiations, argue motions, enter pleas; review search warrants; attend and represent the city in municipal court proceedings; represent the city in jury and bench trials; and work closely with local law enforcement.
