Job summary

Louisiana Blue in Baton Rouge seeks an experienced health actuary to lead actuarial analyses, pricing and risk assessment. The role requires strong Excel/SQL skills and collaboration with Underwriting, Marketing, IT and Compliance.

Candidates should have a BS in a related field, 5 years of health actuary experience, and ASA designation with Academy membership. Four years can substitute for the degree, and healthcare analytics experience may substitute part of the requirement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, IT, Economics or other related field required
  • Four years of related experience can be used in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree
  • 5 years of experience as a health actuary required
  • 2 years of healthcare analytics experience or similar role may substitute for 2 years out of the 5 years of health actuary experience
  • Expert in actuarial uses of Excel and SQL
  • Excellent analytical and organizational abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong technical report writing skills required
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) Designation required
  • Member of the Academy of Actuaries required

Responsibilities

  • Develops and oversees maintenance of methods, systems, models and assumptions designed to project premium and claim amounts per member for budgeting pricing targets
  • Communicates pricing changes to Underwriting, Marketing, IT and Actuarial Systems departments and oversees testing of systems output to ensure correct pricing per member and accurate benefit quotes
  • Develops and oversees maintenance of methods, systems, models and assumptions used in estimating actuarial liabilities for accurate financial statements
  • Provides pricing support to Marketing to ensure competitive pricing and alignment with actuarial principles
  • Provides support to Underwriting to promote underwriting practices aligned with actuarial principles
  • Prepares and certifies regulatory filings to comply with laws, regulations and actuarial standards
  • Provides career development and mentoring to Actuarial staff
  • Evaluates financial impact of provider risk sharing arrangements and liability calculations under each arrangement
  • Maintains ASO PBM pricing models and coordinates with Underwriting regarding PBM pricing
  • Calculates medical trends and identifies drivers of trend

Accountabilities And Essential Functions
  • Develops and oversees maintenance of methods, systems, models and assumptions designed to project premium and claim amounts per member for the purpose of ensuring that budgeted pricing targets are as precise as possible.
  • Communicates pricing changes to Underwriting, Marketing, Information Technology and Actuarial Systems departments and oversees testing of systems output to ensure that the correct price is implemented for each member and that benefit options are accurately quoted.
  • Develops and oversees maintenance of methods, systems, models and assumptions used in estimating actuarial liabilities to ensure that these elements of the financial statements are as accurate as possible.
  • Provides pricing support to the Marketing Department to ensure that new products and benefits are adequately and competitively priced and that pricing is consistent with actuarial principles.
  • Provides support to the Underwriting Department to promote underwriting practices that are consistent with actuarial principles.
  • Prepares and certifies regulatory filings to ensure that the company is in compliance with related laws, regulations, and actuarial standards.
  • Provides career development opportunities and mentoring to Actuarial staff to ensure growth, advancement and a high level of quality and productivity.
  • Evaluates financial impact of various provider risk sharing arrangements and calculates liability under each executed risk arrangement.
  • Maintains ASO PBM pricing models and requests from Underwriting regarding ASO PBM pricing. Works with Pharmacy and Underwriting to stay up to date with pharmacy schedules and pricing arrangements.
  • Calculates medical trends and identifies drivers of trend.
