Position Objective

Maintain safe and secure environment for guests and employees and Living marine collection by patrolling and monitoring premises. Safeguard life and property against fire, hazardous conditions, vandalism, theft, or other unlawful activities.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Secure the facility by regularly patrolling Aquarium grounds; inspecting buildings, and access points, and the Aquarium perimeter. Utilize guard tour verification system during each patrol cycle when required. Detain trespassers if possible and notify the supervisor immediately.
  • Protect Aquarium guests and staff from harm, theft, or other unlawful activity.
  • Prevent property losses and damage by reporting irregularities.
  • Observe and report any irregularities or unlawful activity to supervisors and/or public safety agencies (police, fire, EMS), as appropriate.
  • Monitor alarm systems (e.g. fire, intrusion, life support/ozone) and report any alarm conditions to the supervisor, other designated manager (e.g. Plant Engineering, Animal Department), and/or public safety agencies (police, fire, EMS) as appropriate and in accordance with standard operating or emergency procedures.
  • Take appropriate actions during park emergencies and drills in accordance with WCS policy and procedures. (e.g. building or park evacuations, fire evacuations, animal escapes, first aid or AED requests, active shooter, water leaks, gas leaks, etc.).
  • Perform daily inspection of all areas of assigned post for safety issues (e.g. slip/fall, trip hazards) and take corrective action as appropriate, including temporary closure/path detour of the affected area (cones, caution tape, temporary barricades, stanchions, etc.) until repairs can be completed.
  • Monitor 2-way radio, department cell phone, and email. Respond to calls for assistance.
  • Monitor and assist with access control of NYA buildings, Aquatheater, parking lot, or access gates as assigned and assist with oversize vehicle access to the parking lot.
  • Monitor security cameras when assigned, and take appropriate security measures when the situation dictates. Report and document any security, safety issues observed while viewing the Aquarium camera system.
  • Safeguard and maintain issued security equipment in good working condition (e.g. flashlights, detex, radio, NYA security phone, iPad, computer, golf cart). Report immediately any non‑working or damaged issued or assigned equipment.
  • During weather emergencies, help in securing the park from hazards such as floods, high winds, etc. This includes the implementation of the Aquarium's hurricane and flood protection systems in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Provide consistently excellent customer service to Aquarium guests and fellow employees. Create a safe and welcoming environment for all Aquarium guests and staff.
  • Enforce the Society's guest rules and regulations.
  • Understand and implement emergency plans as indicated in the emergency manual.
  • Complete daily reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities. Complete all reports in a timely manner, these reports include Daily activity reports, accident reports, lost property as assigned.
  • Attend court appearances as required pertaining to participation in any work‑related matter.
  • May perform limited ground maintenance work as required such as shoveling snow from security posts and other access points. Moving and securing equipment, stanchions, signs etc.
  • Represent WCS in a professional manner. Establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with employees, colleagues, City, and other government agencies, outside contractors, and the general public.
  • Actively support, advance and uphold the Society's policies regarding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and basic computer skills.
  • Perform other duties and tasks as assigned by management staff.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must obtain and maintain New York State Security Guard Registration. Valid driver license preferred
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, evenings, nights, overtime and special events as the schedule demands to provide 24-hour coverage.
  • Voluntary option to obtain and maintain FDNY Certificate
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The position requires outdoor work in all weather conditions. Walking, running, standing, and climbing several levels of stairs on a routine basis. Tasks require manual dexterity and the ability to safely use tools (e.g. two‑way radio, hand truck, hand tools, keyboarding). Some tasks require climbing, kneeling, bending, navigating uneven terrain, and moderate lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g. moving temporary barricades, stanchions). Must be able to stand or walk for long periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and balance. Must be able to work in an outdoor weather environment in all seasons and weather, including heat/humidity, cold temperatures, and/or wet conditions.
