Job summary

Waltham Public Schools in Waltham, MA seeks an Assistant Unified Basketball Coach to support the program and work with student-athletes in a high school setting.

The role requires prior high school coaching experience, strong communication, teamwork, adherence to ethics, and collaboration with the varsity coach and Athletic Director to develop practices, game plans, and ensure safety.

Qualifications

• Experience coaching at the high school level in basketball.
• Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively.
• Familiarity with NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics.

Responsibilities

• Model the behaviors outlined in the NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics, especially those pertaining to sportsmanship.
• Assists with demonstrating full control of the team in all matters pertaining to coaching and athletic discipline.
• Facilitates supervision of athletes during practice sessions and at all contests, home or away of the sport coached including supervision of the weight room, locker room, shower areas and buses before and after practices and contests.
• Implement WHS athletic department policies and team rules.
• Is responsible for information contained in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Handbook and the WHS Student Handbook.
• Attends all Athletic Department and WHS meetings that relate to the sport coached.
• Stays informed of rule changes, trends, and recommendations that affect their particular sport.
• Responsible for assisting with team evaluation and selection.
• Assist with the development and organization of effective practice plans.
• Provides effective feedback for competitive growth and development.
• Make sure that the facilities and equipment are safe and that safety procedures are taught and followed in all areas.
• Assist with the implementation of game plans and game management where appropriate including score reporting and returning officials vouchers immediately following a contest.
• Supporting the varsity coach when appropriate.
• Fostering partnerships with athletic groups in the community to create continuity in programming at various levels.
• Encouraged to offer clinics and camps.
• Establish avenues of communication with other adults to identify potential resources for the enhancement of WHS athletes and athletics.
• Develop an approach to coaching which encourages outreach to the caregivers of the athletes and invested stakeholders.

Job Description

Job Goal: A member of the Dual County League, Waltham Public Schools has an immediate opening for an Assistant Unified Basketball Coach.

Responsibilities: The coach of an individual sport must realize that any activity sponsored by Waltham Athletics is part of the total program offered by Waltham Public Schools. Candidates should have experience coaching at the high school level in this sport, have strong communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team to ensure the success of our student-athletes. Individuals in charge of such activities must utilize sound educational principles and goals of athletics are to be a worthwhile part of the overall school experience.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Work with the WHS Athletic staff for distribution and collection of the school's athletic equipment and uniforms before, during and after the coaching season, including safety devices and materials.

• Working collaboratively with all other Waltham High School coaches, under the direction of the Athletic Director. This includes, but is not limited to: working to coordinate schedules of games, practices, and events.
• Other duties/responsibilities assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Reports to: Reports to the Director of Athletics.

Salary: WEA Appendix D Stipends
