Job summary

McLane Company, Inc. in Memphis seeks an Assistant Transportation Manager to help establish and maintain a smooth operation of the domicile within the Transportation Department and to provide 24-hour coverage supporting warehousing functions.

You will supervise dispatchers, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, and coordinate scheduling while working with management to resolve issues and improve performance across the transport and distribution network.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field is preferred.
• 3 years of experience in all facets of outbound transportation, preferably in a distribution center.
• Proficiency with Excel, Word, Access; familiarity with PEOPLE NET or similar systems.
• Experience managing drivers including hiring, training, motivating, and resolving teammate relations issues.

Responsibilities

• Direct and motivate teammates to achieve transportation goals.
• Coordinate investigations of accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions per safety standards.
• Ensure compliance with Federal DOT regulations and other safety standards.
• Maintain fleet safely and in accordance with company and governmental standards.
• Supervise transportation dispatchers and manage scheduling and workflows.
• Provide training to maintain an efficient and knowledgeable workforce.
• Enforce company policies and document coaching/disciplinary actions as needed.
• Collaborate with Transportation Manager to resolve warehousing and distribution issues.
• Plan, assign and direct work, address complaints, and resolve problems.
• Maintain flexible schedules to meet departmental needs.

The Assistant Transportation Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining a smooth operation of a Domicile within the Transportation Department and helps provide 24 hours coverage. The primary responsibility is to maintain a properly staffed and trained department that supports the warehousing function by offering the highest levels of logistics support.

What you'll do as an Assistant Transportation Manager:

• Direct and motivate teammates.
• Coordinate the investigation of accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions through the application of company safety standards.
• Be responsible for compliance and knowledge with Federal Department of Transportation regulations and other safety standards.
• Maintain fleet in a safe manner in accordance with company and governmental standards. Comply effectively with company work and safety rules.
• Provide general supervision of all transportation dispatchers and functional processes within the domicile.
• Maintain effective and timely scheduling of Transportation teammates and management staff.
• Facilitate communication within the management team and between the teammates and management.
• Conduct scheduled performance reviews for all management staff and submit recommendations for salary adjustments.
• Provide training as needed to maintain an efficient and knowledgeable work force.
• Enforce general company policies and issuance of coaching/disciplinary documentation to teammates.
• Exhibit leadership and maintain level of managerial professionalism at all times.
• Work with Transportation Manager to resolve issues between warehousing and distribution.
• Plan, assign and direct work; address complaints and resolve problems.
• Work independently and in a team environment.
• Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the changing needs of the Transportation Department.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you'll bring as an Assistant Transportation Manager:

• Bachelor's degree in Business or a related field is preferred.
• Have 3 years of experience in all facets of outbound transportation, preferably a distribution center.
• Be skilled on Excel, Microsoft Word, and Access programs; PEOPLE NET or similar programs (preferred).
• Have experience in managing drivers to include hiring, training, motivating teammates, and resolving teammate relations issues.
• Be able to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, and inter-company memos/outside correspondence.
• Have minimum of 2 years of accounting, planning, analytical and/or reporting experience, in positions with increasing responsibility is preferred.
• Be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, vendors, and teammates.
• Be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
• Have knowledge of distribution systems to include order routing, backhaul and transfer procedures.
• This position requires the ability to read, write, and understand English at a level sufficient to perform job-related tasks effectively and safely. This includes understanding work instructions, safety protocols, and communications essential to the role. The requirement is directly related to the nature of the job and ensures compliance with workplace safety and operational standards.
