Job Overview

Reports To: Head Coach, Athletic Director and Principal

Job Position: Part‑Time, non‑benefited stipend

Job Goal: To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport program as outlined by the head coach and school administration. To instruct athletes in individual and team fundamental strategy and physical training necessary to realize a degree of individual and team success.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Has a working knowledge of all athletic policies approved by the school board and is responsible for implementing them.
  • Has knowledge of the existing school district, state and league regulations and implements them consistently.
  • Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program and school community.
  • Assists with the supervision of student/athletes before practice, during practice, after practice and/or games.
  • Assists the head coach in preparation for scheduled sports events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times.
  • Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provides documentation to the athletic director needed to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provides safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Gives training rules and other sport‑specific regulations to each candidate.
  • Supervises practices, games and team trips; takes measures to safeguard each participant including in locker rooms.
  • Directs student managers and statisticians.
  • Implements school conduct code and delineates due process when discipline is necessary; contacts parents when a student is alleged to have violated the athletic code.
  • Accountable to the head coach for all equipment, collects costs of lost or not returned equipment, issues, marks, stores equipment, submits annual inventory, maintains cleanliness and maintenance of sport equipment.
  • Recommends budgetary items to the head coach for the next year in the program area.
  • Monitors equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizes entry who may enter.
  • Permits athletes to be only in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games to check cleanliness.
  • Secures all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving, even if custodians are on duty.
  • Instills respect for equipment and school property in each player.
  • Assists in carrying out head coach responsibilities such as issuing press releases, instructing changes in rules, teaching fundamentals, maintaining team statistics, attending staff meetings, scouting, conditioning & weight programs, private discussions with other coaches, attending other teams’ contests, visiting playing surface, etc.
Additional Program Responsibilities
  • Assists the head coach in carrying out his responsibilities.
  • Issues press releases and school announcements.
  • Instructs team members concerning changes in rules. Teaches fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the head coach.
  • Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering.
  • Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the head coach of that sport.
  • Attends all staff meetings and carries out scouting assignments as outlined by the head coach.
  • Supervises players before and after practice; prepares and helps players.
  • Helps in planning and implementing in‑season and out‑of‑season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Conducts discussions with other coaches in private.
  • Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the head coach.
  • Attends contests of other teams in the program when possible.
  • Performs other duties consistent with the nature of the position or required by the head coach.
  • Assists in taking care of playing surface and area for your particular sport.
Qualifications
  • GED or high school diploma.
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License.
  • Successful coaching experience in the sport is preferred.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continual examination of new theories and procedures.
  • Valid Virginia Teaching License (preferred).
  • High School/Trade School degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.

All head coaches and their staff are required to complete the coaches education test as provided by the VHSL.
