Job summary

HNTB in New York, NY seeks an Inspector to observe and verify contractor work for compliance with plans and specifications. On-site role with on-the-job training and some night/weekend work, requiring basic math and MS Office proficiency.

Minimum: High School Diploma/GED and 1 year construction experience; a driver’s license and good communication skills. AAS in Civil Engineering Technology preferred; NYSDOT training limits apply.

Qualifications

  • All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements.
  • AAS in Civil Engineering Technology strongly preferred; Bachelor's degree not considered due to NYSDOT training.
  • Must be physically fit, have a driver’s license, not be afraid of heights and have good communication and computer skills.
  • Experience with Word, Excel and MicroStation.

Responsibilities

  • Observe, document, and verify work in progress for contractor to ensure contract compliance.
  • Utilize inspection practices to perform basic math calculations and measurements.
  • Maintain Inspector's daily report of activities, labor and equipment.
  • Assist on-site with material testing and produce as-constructed sketches.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The opportunity entails being responsible for learning and observing inspections. Receives on-the-job training, observes the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction projects, under the direction of a Construction Manager or their designee.

Primary Focus Will Include
  • Performs tasks and duties under direct supervision, with work reviewed by supervisor before submission.
  • Knows basic math skills.
  • Understands Microsoft Office Suite and other computer skills at a basic level.
  • Collaborates by building partnerships and working cooperatively with others within HNTB to meet shared objectives.
  • Effectively communicates by attentively listening to others and relaying an understanding of direction.
  • Actively learns when tackling new problems, using both successes and failures as learning opportunities.
  • There will be some night and weekend work
What You'll Do
  • Observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with contract documents and plans. Confirms procedures are followed and material used conforms to specifications.
  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform rudimentary mathematical calculations and measurements of completed work to date.
  • Maintains Inspector's daily report of assigned work activities, contactor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.
  • Assists in on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What We Prefer
  • AAS in Civil Engineering Technology is strongly preferred. Candidates who have completed Bachelors degrees will not be considered due to the requirements of the NYSDOT training program.
  • Must be physically fit, have a driver’s license, not be afraid of heights and have good communication and computer skills.
  • Experience with Word, Excel and MicroStation.
  • Ability to travel to Long Island - Nassau and Suffolk counties.
