Job summary

Midland College is seeking an Assistant Teacher to guide children toward their fullest potential, assisting classroom teachers and helping prepare and manage activities and administrative tasks.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED, with a CDA credential or related program in progress, and CPR/First Aid within 90 days. Candidates should be able to lift up to 40 pounds and work well with parents and staff on a collaborative team.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have a CDA credential or state certificate that meets CDA requirements or be enrolled in a program to obtain one within two years.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and able to communicate clearly with staff, parents, and children.
  • CPR and First Aid certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Follow Texas HHSA, licensing standards, and Midland College policies.
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement lesson plans and supervise children.
  • Observe and record student progress and plan for individual needs.
  • Maintain up-to-date children’s records and forms.
  • Light cleaning and health/safety duties in the classroom.
  • Attend staff development activities and adhere to attendance policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

This position will guide children to their fullest potential by meeting their needs through assisting the classroom teachers in the care and instruction of the students and the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements. During non‑school calendar days (childcare days), the Assistant Teacher will be responsible for collaborating to create and implement lesson plans and classroom management, as well as all other essential functions.

Responsibilities
  • Know, implement, and adhere to the Texas Health and Human Services, Child Care Licensing Minimum Standards, Workforce Solutions Permian Basin Child Care Services criteria, and Midland College policies
  • Positive job attitude, cooperative with parents, children, and staff
  • Flexibility, willingness to accept change, and keep up with the current trends in the field of early childhood development
  • Work collaboratively to implement developmentally appropriate classroom management, curriculum planning, and implementing of small group experiences, interact and supervise children, including potty training where necessary
  • Collaborate to observe and record student progress through anecdotal records, adopted assessments, and planning for individual needs
  • Use appropriate guidance techniques with children, parents, and staff
  • Maintain up‑to‑date children’s records, release, and emergency forms
  • Light daily cleaning of classroom environment, including disinfecting and light daily laundry
  • Assist in implementing CCL health and safety standards, including keeping the classroom clean and orderly for fire and health standards inspections
  • Maintain 30 clock hours of early childhood training annually to meet CCL guidelines from date of hire
  • Participate in staff development activities and training
  • Dependability in attendance and adherence to all‑time policies
  • Other duties as assigned
Physical Demands
  • Good physical health, energetic, nurturing, and patient
  • Able to lift children up to 40 pounds, assist with potty training, walking, bending, standing, stooping, reaching, squatting down, stretching, sitting on the floor, rising up from low chairs or when sitting on the floor, and must be able to participate with children in gross motor activities
  • Ethical behavior, security‑sensitive work, team‑oriented, cooperation with coworkers, secure work environment, confidentiality required
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with others verbally and electronically; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus
Qualifications – Required
  • High school diploma or GED – verification required within 30 days of employment
  • Must have a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or a state‑awarded certificate that meets or exceeds the requirements for a CDA credential, be enrolled in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree, or be enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within two years of the time of hire
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Good reading, writing, and oral communication skills and ability to communicate positively with coworkers, parents and children
  • Employee is required to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire
Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent experience working in a licensed childcare facility or early childhood program
  • Knowledge of ages and stages of development for children ages 3 to 5 years
  • Associate's degree in Child Development and Early Childhood
