ASSISTANT TEACHER (2nd) – CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

MALCOLM X COLLEGE

Malcolm X College is currently seeking an Assistant Teacher-Secondary for the Child Development Center Department.

The Child Development Laboratory Schools will lead the City of Chicago in providing high-quality, comprehensive programs, as well as demonstration and training sites that serve faculty, students, and children of college staff and the greater Chicago community. Our mission is to provide superb Early Learning services for preschool children and their families. This means a commitment to implementing practices based on established standards and research in the fields of Early Care and Education. Finally, this also means a commitment to providing support to City Colleges of Chicago students, staff, and the broader community. The program’s approach to Child Development and Education is developmentally and linguistically appropriate and demonstrates the understanding that children have individual rates of development, interests, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Families are considered the child’s first teachers and partners in their children’s education.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE

Under the supervision of the Teacher – Child Development Center, and in addition to a primary Assistant Teacher-Child Development Center in the classroom, the Assistant Teacher – Child Development Center (2nd) provides instructional, clerical and non-instructional support in the Child Development Center classroom, in order to implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is aligned with the educational and philosophical goals of the program. Performs related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Adheres to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Code of Ethical Conduct, demonstrating a professional attitude and work ethic, and respect for children, families, and colleagues.
  • Provides a safe, healthy environment for children, with a focus on classroom health, hygiene, nutrition, and safety. This includes maintaining a clean and orderly environment for children; ensuring children attend to personal hygiene/hand washing; teaching children about health and nutrition; and reporting accidents, injuries, and illnesses to parents and supervisors.
  • Assists the teacher and primary Assistant Teacher-CDC in the development and implementation of an environment and curriculum that provides for a variety of developmentally appropriate activities to promote children’s development in the areas of language and literacy, cognition, social-emotional well-being, and physical health. Meets with the teachers to discuss and consider the Center’s goals, educational philosophy, and general curriculum plans.
  • Ensures children’s safety through constant supervision, storage of dangerous materials, arrangement and maintenance of classroom and equipment.
  • Works with other teaching staff to provide a nurturing, stimulating, non-punitive, and culturally sensitive environment that encourages language, self-expression, exploration, creativity, imaginative play, thinking skills, and the development of positive relationships.
  • Participates in any quality enhancement initiatives that the center may undertake.
  • Participates in staff meetings, planning, and professional development and shares information gained from coursework or attendance at professional development workshops and conferences.
  • Adheres to requirements put forth by funding, licensing, and accreditation agencies.
  • Performs other duties as required and maintains classroom atmosphere and requirement in the absence of the regular teacher.
  • Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of credit from an accredited college or university, with 9 semester hours or 12 quarter hours in courses directly related to Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field from birth to age six (6).
  • A minimum of one year of work experience working with young children birth to 5 years required. Attainment of Illinois Gateways to Opportunity Level 2 Early Childhood Education or Infant/Toddler Credential within one year of hire.
  • Candidate must be registered with Illinois Gateways to Opportunity and actively pursuing their Level 4 credential in Infant/Toddler (IT) or Early Childhood Education (ECE).
  • Must have and maintain a warm, supportive attitude towards children.
  • Must be flexible in receiving assignments and adapting to changes in the program.
  • Must be willing to accept supervision and continue professional development in the field in order to improve work performance.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with children, parents, and other staff members, as well as for documenting children’s growth and learning.
  • Should be able to assist in the creation and implementation of developmentally appropriate lessons, interact positively with children and other staff, and understand and attend to the physical, social, cognitive, health and safety, and emotional needs of the children.
  • Must be able to work well within a culturally diverse environment with the ability to handle situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to operate computers and use applicable software required.
SALARY RANGE

$46,942 - $51,636.20

Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
