Starting Wage Range: $24.60/hr. - $31.84/hr.
Job Summary:
Provides assistance with developing and implementing instructional programs for preschool children ages 3 to 5. Creates a successful environment that will promote the growth and development of students and families.
Essential Functions:
- Assists with developing and implementing curriculum that is developmentally appropriate with parental involvement and Policy Council approval; provides student instruction in the absence of supervisor.
- Assists in preparation, implementation, and cleanup of meals, educational activities and cultural activities.
- Assists with ensuring the curriculum is being followed to fidelity; including setting up and maintaining a classroom environment that meets students where they are and promotes their continued growth and success in school.
- Provides supervisor with information to accurately document and track student’s development and growth.
- Works with students and staff in classroom, on playground and in field trip supervision taking lead when the supervisor is out.
- May be required to oversee aftercare programing.
- Organizes, replenishes and prepares materials and supplies for classroom activities.
- Observes children's interactions and participation in program activities. Identifies preferences in activities and level of participation.
- Provides continuous opportunities for children of all ages and abilities to experience success.
- Conducts weekly staff meetings when supervisor is not available.
- Helps to provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces child development and educational status and progress.
- Assists children boarding and exiting the bus and assist with children with vehicle restraint systems assuring that all bus safety standards are met
- Responds to emergencies of children or vehicle.
- Assists with emergency evacuation.
- Enforces child drop-off and pick-up procedures/policies.
- Ensures compliance with program policies and procedures.
- Assists with maintaining an established monitoring system that assures compliance with performance standards and program goals.
- Immediately reports safety concerns to supervisor and administration
- Handles disciplinary problems promptly and consistently according to established policy.
- Reports on cases of suspected child abuse according to established policy.
- Provides frequent feedback and guidance using positive communication skills with all students.
- Maintains positive parent contacts such as carrying out positive on-going relationships with families; scheduling and participating in home visits and conferences with families.
- Encourages experimentation and socialization skills with children.
- Shares information regarding child's progress or behavioral concerns with team members to ensure continuum of care between programs.
- Responds to parent/student requests for information, questions, or concerns.
- Assists with conferences for families re: child’s developmental and educational status and progress.
- Assists in inventory and ordering of equipment and materials.
- Schedules and coordinates field trips.
- Operates standard office equipment; answers parent phone calls; files documents; creates purchase orders, check requests, newsletters, and flyers.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires a High School or GED equivalent and minimum of one (1) year of experience working in a Head Start program.
- Must be at least a step 5 in the Oregon Registry Online (ORO) and be able to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA certification within 6 months of hire.
Driving Requirements:
- Employees may be required to drive for work-related purposes and must maintain a valid Oregon Driver’s License (ODL), meet company vehicle insurance requirements, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- First Aid/CPR certification required or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
- Food Handler’s card is required or must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Maintains knowledge in Early Childhood Education.
- Must have the ability to work well with children and staff.
- Must be dependable and demonstrate willingness to participate in additional training.
- Requires TB and Hep B vaccinations and a physical every three years.
- Requires working knowledge and proficiency in use of office equipment and computer software such as Microsoft Products.
- Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, business and telephone etiquette.
- Must have the ability to work at times with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
- Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
- Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
- Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
- This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions. Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan.
- Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies.
- Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
- Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and may be subject to fingerprinting.
- Must maintain registration in the State of Oregon Central Background Registry.
