Job summary

Layton Construction is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to work closely with the Site Superintendent and Project Manager to develop and manage a robust job plan for assigned projects on-site in Hawaii.

The role requires coordinating with field teams, reviewing plans, procuring resources, and ensuring safety and schedule adherence while traveling as needed to support multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience in construction management.
  • Experience overseeing Commercial/Industrial/Multifamily projects from conception to completion.
  • Knowledge of building codes and blueprints.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Job Summary

The Assistant Superintendent will work under the guidance of the Site Superintendent and in partnership with the Project Manager to develop, manage, and complete a job plan for an assigned project. The role is primarily on-site with occasional travel throughout Hawaii.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review plans and specifications to understand job requirements.
  • Develop a comprehensive job plan, including schedule, access, manpower, and building requirements.
  • Procure tools, labor, and certain materials.
  • Interact with architects and owners to resolve job issues.
  • Meet with the General Superintendent regularly for training and development.
  • Communicate construction issues and progress to supervisory personnel and subcontractors, and provide updates on project progress.
  • Work with supervisors and labor representatives to resolve workforce problems.
  • Consult with supervisory, engineering, and inspector personnel to resolve construction problems and improve methods.
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure compliance with specifications and schedules.
  • Manage the project based on progress reports, material usage, and costs, adjusting work schedules as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Manager of Field Operations to allocate personnel across projects to maximize resources.
  • Manage crew mixes and work assignments to control labor costs.
  • Assist the Project Manager in preparing the Project Management Plan.
  • Track and price extra work tickets, change requests, and back charges to cover additional expenses.
  • Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, reporting unsafe activities to supervisors or Safety.
  • Demonstrate integrity and maintain professional standards of conduct and ethics.
  • Participate actively in the team environment and contribute to successful completion of team goals.
  • Accept accountability for both individual and team performance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Minimum 2+ years of experience within the construction management industry.
  • Experience providing oversight on Commercial, Industrial, and/or Multifamily construction projects from conception through completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of construction processes.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of building codes and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of subcontractors’ scopes of work and quality requirements.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to handle a variety of variables with moderate structure and direction.
  • Ability to proactively manage personnel issues.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to process information quickly and follow through with a course of action.
  • Proficiency with office equipment such as computer, printer, fax, copier, and telephone.
  • Preferably 2–3 years of prior field experience in commercial construction.
  • Preferred craft skills in concrete or other building trades or equipment operation.
  • Ability to work locally and/or travel.
Salary and Benefits

Salary range: $95,000 – $120,000. Eligible for travel/relocation assistance.
