Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Phoenix, AZ, seeks an Assistant Substation Engineer to support high‑voltage substation design from concept to construction under a licensed PE. You will assist with design packages, calculations, and field work to meet project budgets, schedules, and quality.

Required: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (ABET preferred) and strong communication and teamwork skills; internship or related experience is a plus; US work authorization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field required.
  • ABET accreditation strongly preferred.
  • Internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist design of substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
  • Support development of design packages (arrangement, protection, grounding, etc.).
  • Help develop substation calculations (insulation, DC systems, cable sizing, etc.).
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, BOMs, equipment specs.
  • Apply IEEE/NESC standards and assist field inspections.
  • Contribute to data research, client presentations, and status reports.
  • Assist in QA/QC and meet project deadlines.
