Colby is a member of the New England Small College AthleticConference (NESCAC) and has 32 intercollegiate sports that competeat the Division III level. The department also includes the campusrecreation program and hosts a variety of club and intramuralsports. More than one-third of Colby’s 2,200 students participatein intercollegiate sports and, in total, nearly three-quarters areinvolved in fitness and recreation activities in thedepartment.

With an investment of over $250 million into Athletics in the lastdecade, Colby’s state-of-the-art athletics complex makes thefacilities on Mayflower Hill a benchmark for all Division IIIinstitutions across the country. The Harold Alfond Athletics andRecreation Center is the central hub of Colby athletics. The350,000 square-foot athletics center includes basketball andvolleyball courts, an indoor track and field competition center,aquatic center with Maine’s first 50-meter pool, squash center,hockey arena, a tri-level strength and fitness center, trainingrooms, and coaching suites. Additionally, the College opened a70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of eightcompetition and recreational fields that are also among the finestoutdoor venues in Division III. The College has seen dramaticimprovement in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings since theopening of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center,elevating to the top-6% of Division III institutions in the yearlystandings.

An additional distinguishing feature of Colby College’s AthleticDepartment is its Peak Performance Program, a comprehensivehigh-performing model designed to optimize student well-being andperformance. Peak Performance integrates sports medicine, strengthand conditioning, mental performance, nutrition and sportssciences.

Located in central Maine, the College has incredible access toother outdoor venues such as the Belgrade Lakes and SugarloafMountain Resort, one of the premier ski destinations on the eastcoast.

The Colby College Department of Athletics is seeking a full-time,10 month appointed assistant strength and conditioning coach.Reporting to the Dawn Strout head strength and conditioning coach,the assistant strength and conditioning coach is responsible forthe development, implementation, and management of individual andgroup strength training programs for student-athletes participatingin the intercollegiate athletics program.

The hiring rate for this position is $42,966 ($51,500annualized).

Essential Functions
  • Empower student-athletes to perform to their physical potentialin their sport through the development and management of year-roundstrength and conditioning programs
  • Develop programs by evaluating athletes as part of the greaterPeak Performance initiative; have varied knowledge of trainingmodalities in order to develop appropriate training programs for avariety of sports
  • Appropriately prescribe exercises, strength and conditioningprograms for assigned teams
  • Work in conjunction with head coach in scheduling both groupand individual training sessions
  • Demonstrate proper technique of exercises, and appropriatelymodify and/or correct technique as needed
  • Manage programs by monitoring progress and provide anassessment of development using various methods includingsubjective and objective measurement tools
  • Provide guidance and education to coaches in meeting thestrength and conditioning needs of their programs both individuallyand as part of the Peak Performance team
  • Work with sports medicine personnel and/or athletic trainers inthe return of athletes to participation in the off-season andin-season
  • Abide by and comply with National Collegiate AthleticAssociation (NCAA) and New England Small College AthleticConference (NESCAC) rules, academic standards, requirements,policies of the College, and all guidelines and policies of theAthletics department; report any concerns of compromise orviolation of rules, standards, guidelines or policies to theappropriate personnel
  • Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of,respect for, and development of skills to engage with a diversecommunity
  • Position is part of the Peak Performance team working closelywith other members, analyzing data from force plates, wellnessquestionnaires, and other technologies in the training space
  • Contribute to the overall success of the College’sintercollegiate program by performing all other duties andresponsibilities as assigned; duties, responsibilities, andactivities may change at any time with or without notice
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of a diverseworkforce to the college’s overall success
  • The scope of the position may require weekend, evening, and/orearly morning work
Position Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent in education andexperience; emphasis in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology,Physical Education, or Masters Degree in related fieldpreferred
  • Minimum of two years of experience is required in positionsinvolving the development and management of sport-specificindividual and group strength training programs, experience withcontact or collision sports preferred
  • Current certification as a Certified Strength and ConditioningSpecialist (CSCS) or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified(SCCC) is required for the duration of employment
  • Current CPR/First Aid certifications required for the durationof employment
  • Experience with development and management of strength trainingprograms at the college/university level, management of ahealth/fitness or weight training facility, or student-athleteexperience, in any sport at the collegiate level, preferred
  • Previous experience with equipment maintenance ispreferred
  • Previous experience with data collection, analysis, and use ofsport science software is preferred
  • Excellent communication skills, supervisory, and managementskills are required
  • Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills toengage with coaches, sports medicine staff, administration, andstudents
  • Previous experience with coordinating an effective internshipprogram
  • Scope of the position requires the ability to perform and/ordemonstrate various physical strength exercises and to assistothers performing those exercises individually or in a groupsetting
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development ofstudent athletes from varied backgrounds.
Physical/Mental Demands
  • To successfully perform the essential functions of thisposition, an employee must be able to maintain appropriateconfidentiality with regard to employee data, documents, issues,etc., and respect privacy needs of employees and past employeeswith regard to the same.
  • The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines isrequired to successfully perform the essential functions of thisposition; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent taskcompletion required.
  • There may be occurrences of employees, past employees, membersof the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibitstrong emotions, which will require the employee to interactprofessionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in suchsituations.
  • While performing the essential duties of this position, anemployee would frequently be required to move around on grass,turf, courts, gymnasium, and training rooms.
  • There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged personalcomputer use which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage aswell as viewing a computer monitor.
  • An employee must frequently lift large amounts of weight toperform essential position functions.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position includeclose vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The overall work environment requires the mental ability toshift focus quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be ableto mentally track multiple projects and tasks as well.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loudsounds.
  • Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work isrequired.
