POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Store Manager shares responsibility for driving business results through effective selection, training, and coaching of the store team in key areas of sales, customer service, merchandise presentation, operations, human resources, and loss prevention with the store manager. Work with upper management to execute and enforce company policies and procedures. This position is regarded as "in training" for a Store Manager role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • General Scope of Position: Open and close store based on company guidelines. Apply visual presentation concepts to execute and maintain merchandise changes. Manage loss prevention practices to safeguard company funds, property, and inventory. Maintain store appearance, including product replenishment, housekeeping, and opening/closing procedures. Communicate with Store Manager and/or District Manager regarding all operational activities.
  • Sales Management: Ensure effective execution of all sale promotions. Demonstrate leadership in driving sales productivity. Communicate sales goals daily to all staff members.
  • Customer Service: Demonstrate customer service techniques by ensuring a high level of interaction with customers. Assist the Store Manager in training staff on presenting and assisting customers in merchandise selections. Maintain a high level of customer service by ensuring merchandising/recovery, and processing customers in a timely manner at the register and cash wrap area.
  • Merchandise Presentation: In coordination with Store Manager ensure accurate execution of promotional set‑up of store. Hands‑on involvement in floor moves and visual merchandising initiatives. Maintain all wall displays and merchandise using required display fixtures, while using appropriate ladder.
  • Human Resources: In coordination with Store Manager ensure that new staff members are trained per company standards. Ensure hiring practices result in quality staff. Address substandard performance with fair and consistent corrective action. Set and communicate clear performance expectations, train and develop staff, demonstrate leadership initiative, motivate staff through positive interactions.
  • Financial Responsibility: Ensure proper cash control within company policy. Ensure proper banking procedures within company policy. Maintain payroll within established guidelines.
  • Loss Prevention: In coordination with Store Manager educate staff about potential causes of shrink. Ensure compliance with company security and loss prevention policies and programs. Properly operate and ensure that alarm system is kept functional at all times, performing alarm tests regularly.
  • Store Administrative/Maintenance: In coordination with Store Manager maintain all employee files. Maintain neatness and cleanliness of store. Monitor all paperwork and keep binders current. Maintain store equipment in proper working condition. Maintain store‑level compliance with company standards of safety, security, facility maintenance, and postings/notifications.

SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
  • Experience:

    <1.5M – Minimum of 18 months experience as a Service Manager with Melrose or a similar retail environment, or an equivalent position in a similar retail environment. Ability to manage 6 or more staff members.

    >1.5M – Minimum of 12 months experience as a Service Manager in a low or mid‑volume store at Melrose or a similar retail environment. Ability to manage 4 or more staff members.

  • Computer Skills: Ability to operate a POS cash register, calculator, scanner, and related equipment.
  • Other Requirements: Ability to perform high school level math; work long hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary; maintain a professional, well‑groomed appearance at all times; reliable transportation; ability to provide a phone number to be reached in case of store emergency by Alarm Company or staff members; occasional travel for training meetings may be necessary; must meet the minimum age of 18.
