Job summary

Qualifications

• Knowledge of safety and health requirements for container terminal environments.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and plan activities before ships arrive; check berth conditions, work areas for safe operation, and assemble labor for efficient operations.
• Supervise gangs for vessel loading and unloading according to the vessel plan.
• Ensure each gang is organized and knows tasks to maximize productivity.
• Coordinate load and discharge with the ILA foremen; be the focal point for ships' crews.
• Instruct subordinates in safe working practices and SOPs; provide regular supervision and feedback.
• Hold regular meetings with subordinates to share company information and safety emphasis.
• Counsel subordinates and, if needed, recommend disciplinary actions.
• Follow company policies, the collective bargaining agreement, and local practices in supervising staff.
• Identify and solve daily problems; report complex or high-impact issues to management.
• Act as a focal point for stevedoring issues on assigned vessels.
• Other duties as assigned.

The Assistant Safety Manager will also assist vessel operations in Safety incident investigations and Manage the line handling operational requirements.**Essential Duties:*** Supervise and plan in advance activities prior to the ship coming into port. Check berth conditions for docking, work areas for safe operation of stevedores and checkers, and that all labor has been assembled for adequate and efficient operations.* Supervise the gangs for vessel loading and unloading, in accordance with the vessel plan.* Ensure that each gang is organized, that each person knows what to do and when to do it, so that productivity levels are high.* Ensure that the load and discharge is performed accurately and timely. Coordinates these activities through the ILA foremen on the assigned shift.
