As an Assistant Resident Engineer, you will support the Senior Resident Engineer in the field administration and construction oversight of transit and rail projects, with an emphasis on station, facility, and infrastructure work typical of agencies such as CTA and Metra. This role will help confirm that work is performed in accordance with contract documents, quality requirements, safety expectations, schedule commitments, owner procedures, and the constraints of active transit operations.

Role accountabilities:
  • Support the Senior Resident Engineer with day-to-day field administration, contractor coordination, and owner communication.
  • Track submittals, schedules, insurance, permits, testing documentation, and other contract requirements to confirm timely review and approval by the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and participate in meetings with contractors, facility personnel, design consultants, agency representatives, and other project stakeholders.
  • Prepare and distribute meeting minutes, action item logs, and related project correspondence.
  • Verify that required material inspections, testing activities, and quality documentation are completed, reviewed, and properly filed.
  • Maintain and organize inspection records, daily reports, photos, shop drawings, submittal logs, and other construction documentation.
  • Monitor contractor progress against the approved construction schedule and support identification of potential delays, access constraints, outage conflicts, public-facing impacts, or coordination issues.
  • Assist with review, documentation, and processing of potential changes, change orders, field directives, and related cost or schedule impacts.
  • Support review of contractor pay applications by confirming quantities, backup documentation, field progress, and alignment with contract requirements.
  • Coordinate with inspection staff to gather field reports, photos, testing records, and other documentation required for official submission.
  • Support final project closeout, including punch list tracking, as-built documentation, warranties, manuals, O&M materials, and other contract-required deliverables.
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field required.
  • Professional Engineer license preferred; EIT with a clear path toward PE licensure will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 8 years of construction management, resident engineering, field engineering, or inspection-related experience, preferably on transit or rail projects.
  • Station construction or renovation experience preferred, including passenger facilities, platforms, vertical circulation, track-adjacent work, utility coordination, access constraints, and work in active operating environments.
  • Familiarity with contractor safety coordination, rail/transit access procedures, right-of-way restrictions, outage planning, and work performed adjacent to the public or active operations preferred.
  • Experience working with public transit agencies such as CTA, Metra, or similar rail/transit owners is preferred.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with contractors, owners, designers, inspectors, and operations personnel.
  • Experience with construction management and document control tools such as Primavera P6, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Office, and electronic document control systems preferred.
