Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking Attorneys to serve as Assistant Public Defender I/II in the Southwest Virginia offices. Roles will handle criminal cases for adults and juveniles in various stages of litigation within the Indigent Defense Commission.

You will work regionally across Halifax and Martinsville offices, in a fast-paced courtroom setting, collaborating with staff to protect defendants’ rights and ensure zealous advocacy. Previous defense experience is valued.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and Virginia State Bar admission are required for consideration for this full-time, salaried position.
• Active interest in indigent defense, criminal justice reform, and social justice.
• Willingness to try cases and improve as a trial attorney.
• Ability to learn quickly and internalize feedback, track deadlines, and communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

• Conduct client and witness interviews and work with staff investigators to build cases.
• File pretrial motions, litigate motions, and handle post-trial motions.
• Try cases in General District, Juvenile and Domestic Relations, and Circuit Courts; see clients in jail and maintain regular communication with clients and families.
