Job summary

Accounting Search is seeking an Assistant Project Manager for heavy civil highway and utility projects in Virginia. This role supports senior PMs on roadway, highway and utility work with DOT experience preferred and relocation available.

Based in the Fredericksburg area, you will drive submittals, RFIs, procurement and cost tracking while coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers and VDOT inspectors. A defined path to PM is offered within a family-owned contractor.

Qualifications

• Drive submittals, RFIs and procurement to keep field crews ahead of work.
• Coordinate subcontractors and supplier purchase orders.
• Track quantities, production and cost against budget.
• Prepare monthly pay applications and cost projections.
• Support schedule updates and change management.
• Work with VDOT inspectors and owner representatives.
• Keep project documentation clean and current.
• Take part in weekly schedule and cost reviews with the project team.
• Support a strong jobsite safety culture.

Responsibilities

• Lead submittal and RFI workflows to maintain schedule integrity.
• Coordinate subcontractor activities and material procurement.
• Monitor cost against budget and update cost projections.
• Prepare and review pay applications for monthly invoicing.
• Assist in schedule updates and change management processes.
• Interface with VDOT inspectors and client reps.

An established, family owned self perform heavy civil contractor with more than 50 years in Virginia is hiring an Assistant Project Manager for heavy civil highway and utility projects across the state. This is a strong opportunity for a Project Engineer, Field Engineer or current APM with DOT experience who wants a real path to running their own projects. You'll work alongside a senior PM on roadway, highway and utility work, much of it VDOT. Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia candidates are great, and candidates from anywhere ready to relocate are welcome.

What You'll Be Responsible For

What We're Looking For

3+ years on heavy civil, highway or utility projects as a Field Engineer, Project Engineer or APM

VDOT or other DOT project experience strongly preferred

Working knowledge of scheduling and cost tracking

B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent field experience

HeavyJob, Bluebeam or P6 experience is a plus

Valid driver's license

Based in Virginia or ready to relocate, relocation assistance available
