Job summary

Software Placement Group (SPG) is hiring an Assistant Project Manager in the Richmond area to grow into a future project leader on active projects. You will work directly with a Senior Project Manager, driving submittals, RFIs, and procurement schedules to keep field crews aligned with the project plan.

The role requires 3–10 years in heavy civil/highway/utility projects, a related engineering degree, and a willingness to relocate locally.

Qualifications

• 3-10 years of experience on heavy civil, highway, or utility projects (field engineer, project engineer, or current APM).
• Working knowledge of construction scheduling and cost tracking.
• B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, and/or equivalent field experience.
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record; travel is primarily local.
• Based in or willing to relocate to the Richmond area (relocation assistance available for the right candidate).

Responsibilities

• Drive submittals, RFIs, and procurement schedules so field crews stay ahead of the work.
• Coordinate subcontractors and supplier purchase orders to protect schedule commitments.
• Track quantities, production, and costs against budget, flagging variances early.
• Support monthly payment requisitions, cost projections, and project documentation.
• Participate in weekly project team meetings covering schedule and cost review.
• Support a strong safety culture instilled at every level of the project.
• As experience grows, take on owner and inspector interface, schedule updates, and change management.

Overview

This opportunity is with an established heavy civil and highway construction contractor with a long operating history across Virginia and North Carolina. The company self-performs heavy civil, heavy highway, site development, and utility work for federal, state, municipal, and private clients, and is led by a management team of licensed professionals. As backlog in the Richmond area continues to grow, the company is looking to develop an Assistant Project Manager into a future project leader by pairing them directly with a Senior Project Manager on active projects.

What you'll do

Compensation and benefits

• Base salary $110,000-$145,000, depending on skills and experience
