Role
The Assistant Project Manager will support the successful planning, execution, and financial performance of civil construction projects while developing into a Project Manager. This position is designed for an individual who is an expert user of HCSS HeavyJob and possesses a strong understanding of project cost management, production tracking, and construction operations.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years of experience in heavy civil construction, project engineering, estimating, project controls, or construction administration
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business, or a related field; equivalent construction experience may be considered
- Experience working for a heavy civil, site development, utility, concrete, or general civil contractor
- Experience with production-based estimating and construction equipment costs
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Expert-level proficiency in HCSS HeavyJob is required
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Experience using HCSS HeavyBid
- Experience with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project
- Experience in estimating heavy civil construction projects
- Experience with earthwork, grading, utilities, concrete, roadway, mining, industrial, or site development projects
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification
- Professional Engineer (PE) or Certified Construction Manager (CCM) credentials
Responsibilities
- Serve as the company's subject matter expert for HCSS HeavyJob
- Maintain accurate daily production, labor, equipment, and material cost tracking within HeavyJob
- Review and validate foremen's daily reports, employee timecards, equipment utilization, production quantities, and cost coding
- Monitor project budgets and assist with forecasting project costs, productivity, and profitability
- Assist Project Managers in planning, coordinating, and managing multiple civil construction projects.
- Review project plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents
- Support project startup activities including scheduling, subcontractor coordination, permitting, and project setup
- Assist in preparing change orders, requests for information (RFIs), submittals, purchase orders, and project correspondence
- Coordinate with accounting to ensure accurate job costing, billing support, and subcontractor documentation
- Participate in project meetings with owners, engineers, subcontractors, and field personnel
- Conduct regular jobsite visits to verify production, progress, safety compliance, and project documentation
- Work closely with Superintendents and Foremen to improve production reporting accuracy and cost control
- Assist in procurement of materials, equipment, rentals, and subcontracted services
- Maintain organized project files, schedules, documentation, and communications
- Assist with project closeout documentation and final reporting
- Identify project risks and communicate concerns to the Project Manager
- Support implementation of company safety policies and OSHA requirements
- Continuously develop project management knowledge through mentoring, field training, and increasing project responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned to support successful project execution
- Dealing with conflict and being able to solve it quickly
- Manages construction cost tracking and job cost activities to support accurate financial reporting
- Prepares and analyzes production reports to monitor project performance and productivity
- Applies fundamental construction estimating principles to support accurate project planning and pricing
- Maintains strong organization and attention to detail while managing multiple project responsibilities
- Effectively manages time and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines and project requirements
- Uses problem-solving and analytical thinking skills to identify issues and develop effective solutions

- Frequent ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds throughout shift
- Frequent ability to sit, climb, reach, and bend throughout shift
- Ability to walk construction sites and navigate uneven terrain when required
- Ability to work approximately 70–80% of the time in an office environment
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Position Type, Travel and Work Schedule
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are determined by job requirements. Weekend work and working long hours will be required when necessary.
