Job summary

Imogen Foundation seeks an Assistant Program Director to lead and support afterschool program operations in a NYC public school setting. You will partner with the Program Director to ensure safe, organized delivery of childcare and enrichment activities, while building relationships with school staff, parents, and regulators.

The role focuses on supervising staff, maintaining compliant operations, and coordinating with education specialists to support children's development and well-being

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of classroom experience OR currently pursuing a degree in education or related field.
  • Excellent academic skills and practical experience in your subject area; professional experience a plus.
  • Ability to create an atmosphere encouraging creative thinking, communication, problem-solving and self-confidence.
  • Capacity to broaden and synthesize experiences in working with children.
  • Ability to organize time and duties and handle emergencies.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support a diverse program staff of varying levels of experience and skill.
  • Support all aspects of onsite operations of the afterschool program.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with important stakeholders.
  • Promote the program within the school community to increase enrollment.
  • Support regular communication with families, school administrators, and IF leadership.
  • Ensure program safety and compliance with all SACC regulations, DOE regulations, and IF policies.
  • Greet students during snack time and take attendance.
  • Oversee dismissal and transition of students between activities and end-of-day.
  • Work with teachers to provide a safe environment for children.
  • Work with teachers and appropriate other staff and consultants to provide individualized support to children through assessments and plans.
  • Maintain open communication with the program director, activity specialists and other staff.
  • Collaborate to prepare and implement daily activities.
  • Support quality assessment and continual improvement.

Imogen Foundation builds emotional resilience and supports the mental wellness of children and teens through project-based learning, youth leadership, community engagement, and literacy. Our afterschool programs center student choice, belonging, and compassionate relationships that help children thrive. Our afterschool programs are designed to support students as they build independence, identity, leadership, and healthy relationships with peers and adults.

The Assistant Program Director plays a critical leadership role in supporting safe, consistent, organized, and mission-aligned program operations.

Our programs are dedicated to supporting the social and emotional learning of participants by providing choice-based activities that empower student voices, and delivery methods that develop compassion, understanding and kindness. An Assistant Program Director (AD) in one of our afterschool programs supports and collaborates with the Program Director (PD) to manage and support all aspects of program operations and staff. In addition to helping develop, implement, staff, manage, and supervise childcare and enrichment activities serving elementary school children onsite in a NYC public school facility, every day that schools are in session, AD will help develop and maintain relationships with essential stakeholders, including: school administration, faculty and staff; inspectors from NYS DOH and other city and state agencies; parents and families, and - most importantly - children.

Requirements
  • Successful previous experience working with children, preferably in an after-school program with great job references
  • 2+ years of classroom experience OR currently pursuing a degree in education or a related field (preferred)
  • Excellent academic skills and practical experience in your subject area; professional experience a plus
  • Ability to create an atmosphere that will encourage creative thinking, verbal communication, a problem-solving approach to conflict between children, independent exploration and self-confidence and awareness.
  • Capacity to broaden and synthesize experiences in working with children.
  • Ability to organize time and effort to meet regularly assigned duties and occasional emergencies
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to deliver and receive constructive feedback
  • Excellent problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and G-SuiteExcellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to maintain composure in high pressure situations, and continue treating all people with compassion and kindness
