Job Summary

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking talented applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Power Electronics. Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2027.
We will strengthen our commitment to recruiting and retaining diverse and exceptional global talent by advancing a community of success, wellness, and inclusivity. As the flagship public land-grant university of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we expand educational access, fuel innovation and creativity, and share and use our knowledge for the betterment of the world. We embrace our responsibility to advance the inclusive and equitable well-being of all people and the health of our planet.
The position is defined broadly across the full scope of power electronics and power conversion engineering. Scholars working across disciplines or in nontraditional or emerging areas of power electronics are particularly encouraged to apply. Demonstrated connections or potential for partnership with industry and national laboratories is a plus.
Specific areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor and oxide devices and their application in power conversion systems
  • Design, control, and optimization of power electronic converters and inverters
  • Grid-connected power electronics, motor drives, microgrids, and distributed energy resources
The position is part of the department's strategic growth in energy systems and electrification, aligned with the university's Energy Transition Institute and the new Sustainable Engineering Laboratories building. We are committed to expanding the scope of our department beyond our traditional strengths.
As a campus, college, and department with an increasingly diverse student body, we are looking for candidates who can operate effectively in a diverse faculty and student community, and who value collegiality, collaboration, achievement, and integrity. We encourage applications from individuals with a commitment to mentor under-represented demographics within engineering. We welcome candidates who have had non-traditional career paths, those who have paused their careers for family or other reasons, or who spent time outside of academia.
Essential Functions

The candidate is expected to develop an externally-funded research program in power electronics engineering and develop and maintain an internationally recognized scholarly presence. External funding sources in this area include NSF (ECCS, CBET, ERC programs), DOE (EERE, ARPA-E), DARPA, and industry partnerships.
The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching existing graduate and undergraduate courses in related areas, and will be encouraged to develop creative new curricula in areas of their expertise, including courses supporting the department's power and energy systems academic program.
The candidate is also expected to contribute meaningful service to their department, College, University, and externally within their field through participation in committees, faculty governance, and activities that support the academic community.

Other Functions

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field, or anticipate having such a degree by August 31, 2027.
