Job description

The Department of Theatre, Dance and Film at Providence College seeks a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Theatre beginning August 1, 2027.

The department seeks a Theatre Generalist with a PhD in Theatre, Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, or a related field. The position includes a 3/3 course load which will include Theatre Appreciation, Script Analysis, History of Theatre, Multicultural Theatre in America, Western Drama in Performance, and special topics courses within the candidate’s expertise. Other courses may include Oral Communication, Oral Interpretation, Introduction to Acting, Public Speaking, Theatrical Production, or Principles of Playwriting, depending on the candidate's expertise. Other duties include participation in departmental mainstage productions, meetings, and activities; new student recruitment; academic advisement; and advisement on student creative projects. Active engagement in creative and/or scholarly work, a commitment to excellence in teaching, and service to the college and one’s discipline are required. Successful candidates will provide evidence of inclusive pedagogy and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The department offers a BA in theatre and theatre with a concentration in musical theatre, as well as minors in dance and film. In addition to the major courses, the department also serves the college by offering courses which fulfill the college’s Fine Arts core requirement and Oral Communication core proficiency. Salary: $66,000-$76,000

Required Qualifications
  • An PhD in Theatre, Theatre History, Dramatic Literature, Performance Studies, or a related field (ABD considered if degree is completed by start date)
  • Evidence of effective teaching at the college/university level
  • Record of creative and/or scholarly work or evidence of potential for developing future creative and/or scholarly projects
  • Commitment to teaching, scholarship, advising, and service as integral components of faculty work
