Job description

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, has been authorized to make an appointment in semantics. The position will be filled at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track). Duties will include teaching (up to three courses per year); undergraduate and graduate advising and supervision of student research; development of a successful and original research program; and service contributions. Candidates with a research specialization in formal semantics and a broad intellectual engagement in linguistics are encouraged to apply.

The department seeks applicants with a research focus in formal semantics as applied to human languages, whether spoken or signed. We especially welcome candidates whose research connects with crosslinguistic inquiry or provides a clear future pathway to such connections. The department welcomes additional research interests or skills that will contribute to the intellectual life of a broad linguistics community. Connections to areas such as experimental linguistics, pragmatics, and/or language documentation are welcomed. The successful candidate will be expected to teach general linguistics courses as well as courses in formal semantics at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, and to provide research mentoring, as well as to participate in service to the department, university, and field.

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit the Office for Faculty Equity and Welfare's website.
