The University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in quantum physics, with emphasis on experimental work in quantum matter and many-body phenomena. We welcome innovative researchers who can establish an independent program. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Physics or related field with postdoctoral experience.
Start date is September 1, 2027. Salary range is $79,350–$124,620. Inquiries to Prof.
The Department of Physics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a faculty position in quantum physics. This is a broad search welcoming outstanding candidates whose research advances the understanding, exploration, or control of quantum systems. We are particularly interested in quantum matter and quantum many-body phenomena, while remaining open to compelling research directions across quantum physics.
The department’s hiring priority is an experimental physicist at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level. We seek candidates with an original scientific vision and the ability to establish or further develop a distinctive, independent research program. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, strongly correlated quantum matter, quantum materials, quantum magnetism, unconventional superconductivity, topological phenomena, and non-equilibrium quantum dynamics. These examples are illustrative rather than restrictive: we welcome approaches that connect existing areas or open new directions.
Exceptionally qualified candidates working in theoretical and computational quantum matter and quantum many-body physics are encouraged to contact the search committee Chair (Prof. Tigran Sedrakyan, tsedrakyan@physics.umass.edu ) to present their research interests and vision, and to discuss opportunities.

Please note:
The low end of this range is based on the minimum salary for the rank included in the collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Massachusetts Society of Professors, UMass Amherst/MTA/NEA. The high-end of the pay range reflects an increase above the median salaries at this rank within the department for faculty who may have multiple years of faculty experience. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors, including faculty rank and required relevant certifications, when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment.
Evaluation of applicants will begin on January 1, 2027 and may continue until a suitable candidate pool has been identified. All questions pertaining to this position can be directed to Prof. Tigran Sedrakyan ( tsedrakyan@physics.umass.edu ), Chair of the search committee.
