Position Overview

The University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics with a focus on Data Science, starting in Academic Year 2026–2027. The position will remain open until filled, with priority given to applications received by January 5, 2026.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics and data science.
• Support the development of the data science programs.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in statistics, biostatistics, data science, or a closely related discipline (degree must be earned before 31 August 2026).
• Demonstrated ability to conduct academic research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability and interest in teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in statistics and data science.
• Potential to develop and maintain a collaborative, externally funded research program.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and populations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Research interests in areas such as computational statistics, machine learning-based statistical methods, large language models (LLMs), reinforcement learning (RL), analysis of large datasets, data-centric AI, and image analysis.
• Experience in curriculum development at undergraduate or graduate levels.
• Experience advising or mentoring students.
• Interest in developing collaborative research or consulting to support interdisciplinary programs across the Department and the University.
• Willingness to engage in service and outreach activities.
• Ability to support the recruitment and retention of students.
