Successful candidates in Statistics and Data Science will have a record of research excellence, or give evidence of promising research potential, and will show a commitment to effective and engaged teaching. Faculty are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate statistics courses to a diverse student body, develop a vibrant research program, supervise graduate students, provide statistical consulting to the university research community, and serve on departmental and university committees. The successful applicant will find numerous opportunities for collaboration with UAF faculty and state and federal agency scientists working in areas such as ecology, fisheries and wildlife science, physics, geology and geophysics, engineering and mathematics education.

As a tenure-track Department member the successful candidate will teach introductory and upper-division undergraduate courses in statistics, as well as graduate courses in statistical theory and applications, to a mix of majors and non-majors. The typical teaching load will be 4 courses per 9 month academic year. Research in statistical theory and/or applications that meets national and international standards is expected, including publication of peer-reviewed articles, books, and monographs. The goal of quality research is most important, but sustained production is also expected. For applicants with an applied research area, collaboration with a broader research community is appropriate and encouraged. Presentation of research at conferences and workshops is expected, and pursuit of competitive grants is encouraged.

To thrive in this position, candidates must be self-motivated, invested in nurturing the abilities and academic development of students at all levels, and committed to a vibrant research program through publishing research in statistics and related areas. An ideal candidate will have experience working with a diverse student population; be committed to effective and engaging teaching; have the ability to develop new curricula; provide statistical consulting to the university research community; supervise/mentor graduate students; and participate in service with the department, university and community; and have a desire to advance the frontiers of knowledge in statistical theory and applications. Applicants should show commitment to effective and engaged teaching and have a record of research excellence or evidence of promising research potential.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D in statistics or a closely related field (received no later than July 1, 2027).
  • Candidates with postdoctoral research or teaching experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with both in-person and online/distance course delivery are also preferred.
  • Recent graduates will be evaluated on their research potential.
