Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin Department of History invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2027. The position focuses on medieval Europe (excluding Spain) with expertise in premodern global interconnections, Silk Road contacts, and diasporic medieval populations.

The appointee will teach in the Western Civilization core and contribute to undergraduate and graduate education, research, and service. Applicants must have or expect a Ph.D.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. by time of appointment or within a year of joining the faculty as Instructor.
• Some teaching experience in European medieval history, Western civilization, Silk Road, Asia, and/or diasporic medieval populations.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in medieval Europe (excluding Spain) and related premodern global interconnections.

Job description

The Department of History at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2027. We seek a scholar to teach medieval Europe, excluding Spain, with additional expertise in premodern global interconnections, especially the contacts between cultures and societies along the overland or maritime Silk Road(s) that encompass Eurasia, 500-1500 CE, including China. We also encourage applications from specialists in diasporic medieval populations, including global Jewish communities beyond the Mediterranean. The successful candidate must be willing and able to teach in the core curriculum (particularly in the "Western Civilization" core area). Duties will include undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and service to the department, college, and university.

Qualifications

Applicants must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. by time of appointment, or they must expect to obtain the Ph.D. within a year of joining the faculty as Instructor. Some teaching experience in European medieval history, Western civilization, Silk Road, Asia, and/or diasporic medieval populations is required.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Position funding is subject to budget availability.
