Job Description

The Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture (RRSLA) at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in computational landscape architecture.

We seek an exceptional designer-researcher whose teaching, research, and creative practice explore how computation and emerging technologies can expand the intellectual, environmental, spatial, and cultural possibilities of landscape architecture. The successful candidate will approach technology as a means of design inquiry rather than as an end, connecting technological experimentation with ambitious design thinking and a clear scholarly or creative agenda.

Teaching responsibilities will include instruction in the professional Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) programs. The successful candidate will be expected to teach design studios and courses or seminars that integrate computational methods and emerging technologies; review design projects; advise undergraduate and graduate research; and contribute to curricular development. Teaching should help students move beyond technical proficiency toward the critical and creative use of technology as part of the design process. We are seeking a colleague who will contribute to RRSLA's legacy of excellence in design education and advance the discipline through a nationally and internationally visible program of research, scholarship, or creative practice.

Required Qualifications
  • Candidates must have a professional degree in landscape architecture and a graduate degree in landscape architecture or an allied discipline.
  • Candidates should have a record of excellence in research, creative work, or professional practice in landscape architecture.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Landscape Architecture
  • Professional licensure as a landscape architect.
Context

LSU is located in Baton Rouge, the state's capital, and is Louisiana's flagship university. LSU has a beautiful campus with more than 1300 live oaks and is one of the few universities with land-, sea-, and space-grant status. Our rich multicultural location on the Lower Mississippi River near the Atchafalaya River Basin and the Gulf of Mexico provides many opportunities for innovative studio investigations, scholarly activities, and funded projects in landscape architecture.

RRSLA is committed to expanding excellence in landscape architectural education through critical thinking, iterative making, innovation, and theory rooted in the context of the American South. The school is known for its blend of critical, creative, and technical expertise. We are located within LSU's College of Art and Design and offer BLA and MLA degrees. The college also offers bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture, art history, studio art, and interior design and an interdisciplinary Doctor of Design degree.

Opportunities

College resources include LSU's Hilltop Arboretum, a fabrication lab, a woodshop, computer labs, and technology, including robots, drones, 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters, and virtual reality headsets. Hilltop Arboretum is a 14-acre laboratory with native plants, a nursery, and extensive community programming. There are opportunities for interdisciplinary research and teaching through LSU's Coastal Ecosystem Design Studio, which brings together scientists, engineers, and designers to develop nature-based solutions to storms and flooding. The school offers many opportunities for off-campus experiences for students, including internships and both domestic and international field trips. The school also maintains an extensive and loyal alumni network that generously supports the school's academic programs and helps our graduates find internships and jobs.
