The Department of Communications at California State University, Fullerton invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in journalism, with an appointment beginning in August 2027. The role provides an opportunity to teach core and elective courses in the journalism concentration, mentor students, and serve as advisor to the Daily Titan, the university’s student‑run newsroom.

Position

Key responsibilities include:

  • Teaching core courses such as digital news reporting and writing, principles and ethics of journalism, and the Daily Titan capstone.
  • Mentoring the Daily Titan newsroom and collaborating with students and faculty across the university.
  • Conducting research, scholarship, or creative work in journalism and mass communication aligned with tenure milestones.
  • Participating in graduate‑level and evening courses as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or terminal degree in mass communications, journalism, or a related field by appointment.
  • Demonstrated potential for excellent undergraduate teaching.
  • Experience in journalism and ability to teach the Digital News Reporting and Writing or Principles and Ethics courses and the Daily Titan capstone.
  • Capacity to balance teaching, scholarship, and service activities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of successful college‑level teaching.
  • Scholarly research or creative accomplishments in journalism or related fields.
  • News industry or college news media advising experience.
  • Experience incorporating emerging communications technologies such as AI and data visualization into coursework and research.
  • Contribution to accreditation self‑study, curriculum development, and assessment initiatives.
  • Professional network and active participation in industry or academic associations.

Compensation

The faculty salary range for an Assistant Professor (Academic Year) is $6,221 to $13,224 monthly. The anticipated range for this appointment is $6,851 to $6,985 per month.
